NEWS because air flow loss is reduced by their better wear characteristics, surface matching, elasticity and sealing action. Compared with steel, the polymer plates also operate more quietly. It is understood that process reciprocating compressors account for about 50% of China’s growing compressor market. To address this, Victrex says that it is aiming to continue development of its metal-replacement technologies in the oil and gas sector, and other applications. GPT launches latest VCXT hightemperature flange insulating kit
G
arlock Pipeline Technologies (GPT), a manufacturer of safe, high-performance gasket and sealing systems, has announced the release of the all-new VCXT Very Critical Extreme Temperature flange insulation set. This kit is designed to provide electrical isolation across a wide range of seating stresses and flange classes in elevated temperature applications most commonly found in the oil and gas and chemical processing industries. ‘We are pleased to expand our Very Critical Service product family with the addition of VCXT. This insulating kit assures reliable and safe electrical isolation performance in a wide variety of extreme conditions,’ said Tim Hurley, Senior Global Product Manager, GPT. The kit is ideal for load-compromised connections such as damaged or lined flanges, as well as heavily bolted connections where significant gasket stresses may be generated, says GPT. It can be used in a wide range of flange surface finishes because of the high compression characteristics of the facing material. It performs in:
• operational temperatures of –200°C to 410°C (–328°F to 770°F); • operational pressure ranges adherent to ASME B16.5 1500 lb pressure standards; and • a wide range of chemicals (pH 0–14), and sweet and sour gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons. 4

The complete kit comprises an insulating gasket, sleeves and washers, and metal backing washers. The insulating gasket is constructed from a machined metal core using a serrated profile. The metal core is faced with Garlock’s ThermaPur – a proprietary high-temperature sealing material. The use of this material ensures maximum safety by complying with the oil and gas industry’s API 607 and API 6FB fire tests. A Garlock Style 5500 spacer ring, located around the periphery of the serrated metal core, ensures correct gasket location. Flender N-Bipex extends Siemens’ coupling portfolio
S
iemens is extending its coupling portfolio to include a new elastic claw coupling. Called Flender N-Bipex, it is available in ten sizes made from high-quality nodular cast iron. An optimised cam geometry and newly developed elastomers have resulted in a major
improvement to the service life of the N-Bipex, compared with standard couplings available in the market place, claims the company. Depending on the size, torque has been increased by between ten and 20% over previous products. The new elastomers are available in three different shore hardnesses, and enable the couplings to be used across a temperature range of –50°C to +100°C without compromising nominal torque. The casting method used increases the degree of freedom for shaping the cams. This added scope enables the contour to be designed to ensure optimum engagement of the load flank surfaces, says Siemens. The adjacent cam ring, made from highgrade polyurethane, has the facility for sufficient load-dependent deformation, whilst remaining in its designated position under all conditions. This results in a marked reduction in wear, coupled with increased performance. The degree of resilience to forced rupture and the maximum admissible speeds achievable with nodular cast-iron couplings are far superior to those of grey cast-iron couplings, and are comparable with their steel counterparts, says the firm. Company News Aesseal invests in new headquarters in South-East Asia
U
K-based Aesseal Plc has made a further investment in Asia with the opening of new purpose built headquarters in Selangor, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company says it will support the entire area (except China) and comes as a result of 17 years of continued sales and profit growth in the region. This investment is perfectly timed to coincide with the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community this year and will enable Aesseal to enjoy further success in the region. The new premises, with an area of 1279 m2 (13 760 ft2), cost about RM11.5 million. Around RM6 million of this investment was dedicated to the new building, RM2 million on
