resplendence for fibres and flatness for films. Catalysts that are based on antimony, germanium or titanium are normally used in polyester polymer manufacturing. The company plans to improve the technology together with its users to yield more environmentfriendly products. A chemical recycling technology will be launched by Teijin as a new business in Apr 2002, which will facilitate the almost indefinite recycling of polyester. Chemical Fibers International,

Both the raw material and the production process comply with environmental protection and are particularly suitable for the development of environmentally acceptable agriculture. Once the 100,000 tonne/y fully automatic production line has been completed, Xi’an will become the largest production base of such fertilizer in China.

A researcher from Danisco’s Genencor International has found an enzyme around the mud nests of the pink flamingo in Kenya which can bleach jeans within minutes. Researchers from the competing firms Novozymes and Diversa Corp have had the same idea and have been searching for unique enzymes in regions of the Antarctic and in warm pockets under the Atlantic Ocean. The market for such products is estimated at $1.5 bn. Net Posten, 21 Mar 2002. Website: http://www.netposten.dkI (in Danish)

Fertiliser from weathered coal The technology for producing green fertilizer through the processing of weathered coal has passed the appraisal arranged by Shaanxi Science and Technology Department and fertilizer experts in Xi’an High and New-Tech Zone. The technology is the first of the kind in China and is a major breakthrough in the agricultural fertilizer development in China, holding the leading position in China. Xi’an Dingli Science and Technology Industrial Group Corp has developed the active humic acid organic liquid fertilizer. It utilises active humic acid contained in weathered coal as raw 2002

SCANfining technology to an undisclosed party. The proprietary gasoline sulfur reduction process technology reduces Tier II gasoline. It selectively removes sulfur from catalytically cracked naphtha using a catalyst developed by Akzo Nobel Catalysts and EMRE. The technology will be utilised in a 70,000 bbl/d gasoline production plant.
New catalytic converter for Jaguars
Production of metal aluminate supports
Tenneco Automotive is supplying advanced emission control technology to the Ford Motor Co for two new Jaguar models. It uses the Ultra Thinwall Substrate Catalytic Converter which offers a larger catalytic surface area than conventional catalytic converters.
A pre-formed alumina support is impregnated with a molten metal salt (eg zinc nitrate hexahydrate) and calcined to make the aluminate (eg zinc aluminate spinel).

BDC, Belco to combine emissions control offerings to oil refiners BOC has agreed to license its LoTOx nitrogen oxide (NOx) control system to Belco Technologies Corp (Belco), under a joint marketing agreement designed to reduce smog-forming emissions from the main gasoline production units at oil refineries. By combining the LoTOx NOx control with Belco’s EDV Wet Scrubbing system, refiners can control particulates, NOx, and sulfur dioxide from their fluid catalytic crackers all in one easy step. BOC maintains a mobile 250 cu ft/minute demonstration unit to confirm and optimise performance prior to installation. Belco Technologies Corp, headquartered in Parsippany, NJ, is the world leader in refinery air pollution controls. Press release from The BOC Group, UK. Website: http://www.boc.com (14 Mar 2002)
