Focus on research and information
therapists committee, to talk about various research-related issues, and the work of the APCP in this area. I am aware of the importance of the ClGs as centres of special knowledge and experience within the profession and would be interested to explore further with any interested groups research potential and practice of Clinical Interest Groups.

RESEARCH INFORMATION
CSP Research Database This database is now well established, and in addition to new projects, we are beginning to add updated information which you have sent in about existing projects. (My thanks to all those who answered my letter earlier this year.) The database is already available for searches on request; as soon as the reading room at 14 Bedford Row is freed for development as a resource centre (which we hope will be in the new year) a terminal will be available for individuals to search this database personally as well.
Physiotherapy Index I am pleased to note that use is being made of the information about new physiotherapy research projects which has so far appeared in the July and October issues of the Index. We do keep some additional material on these projects at the CSP and inquiries are welcome; researchers may also of course be contacted directly for further information.
Please Keep the Information Flowing! The structure is now in place for a much improved, effective and efficient information network, but it will only be successful if you continue to send in new and updated research information, including results and publication details as these occur. A database form is included with this issue; please fill it in and return it as soon as possible. Further copies are always available from the information officer at the CSP.
RESEARCH EVENTS 1991 Advance Notice
1. Research and Clinical Practice: Recent Advances Inquiries about this exciting new event are welcome, and further details will be available soon. This is the first in an annual series of major physiotherapy research events - an opportunity to hear about the latest research, meet and exchange ideas with others involved in research and be involved in future developments The CSP database will be available for 'hands-on' searching, and there will be an opportunity to participate in a new research information exchange initiative. l am particularly keen to hear from anyone who would like to contribute ten-minute presentations of recently completed work. Please send in as soon as possible a brief outline of your research if you wish to be considered. This is an ideal opportunity to publicise your work in a national forum.

Research Groups 2. Information for
Research and Clinical Practice
The aim of this day will be to educate and inform about sources of information and aspects of information retrieval necessary for research and clinical practice. Techniques of literature searching will be covered, as well as where to go and what to look for when considering sources of information. The use of 'new' technology including on-line databases and CD ROM will also be included and demonstrated and the CSP's own new research database will be available for 'hands-on' searching. More details of these events will be given in next month's Journal.
Research and Clinical Interest Groups Many of the ClGs are developing or have developed research interests. I was pleased to hear about a Research Support Group for Chartered Physiotherapists in Respiratory Care which now holds regular meetings. The contact for this group is Ms J Conway, Research Fellow, Medicine 1, Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, Hants s o 9 4XY. If members of such groups will inform me directly, I am happy to draw attention to them and advertise events on this page. I welcomed the opportunity recently to be present at a working weekend of the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physio-
I am continuing to collect information about research groups and centres throughout the UK. While at a research meeting in Newcastle I added another to my list. The contact is Mrs Heli Munroe, Department of Occupational Therapy, Centre for Professions Allied to Medicine, Peter Gordon's Institute of Technology, Woolmanhill, Aberdeen A69 1G5 (tel 0 2 4 4 681818). Does anyone know of a group in Bristol or the South West? If so, I have someone waiting to hear about it.
Research Course for Physiotherapists Royal Liverpool Hospital, February 14-15, 7991 The North is obviously the place to be these days! Having recently attended a very successful research day for physiotherapists in Newcastle (a report of which I hope to feature in my next research and information page) I am pleased to draw attention to a research course for physiotherapists to be held in Liverpool in February. This two-day event will include sessions on the research process, ethics, single-case research and information resources for research, as well as discussions and short presentations of specific research topics. Speakers will include Dr Anne Parry, Dr Jane Riddoch, Mr Julius Sim and myself. Further information is available from Jacqui Harvey/Karen Lomax, Physiotherapy Department, Royal Liverpool Hospital, Prescot Street, Liverpool L7 8XP.
Physiotherapy Research Foundation Research Awards: 1991 A small grants scheme has been set up with the specific intention of spreading available resources as widely as possible. Applications are invited, and a number of awards will be made, depending on the quality and merit of the research proposals submitted. Any physiotherapist who is a full member of the CSP can apply, and grants of up t o f 2,000 may be awarded. The scheme will fund small or pilot projects, and is also intended t o make a contribution toward the cost of a more substantial piece of research if this is clearly identified and appropriate. Applications will be sent for appraisal t o members of the Physiotherapy Research Foundation Committee. Decisions will be made at twice-yearly meetings in May and November, and proposals for funding must be submitted by the end of March and September respectively. Please bear in mind the time factor when applying; so if you have a project in mind, don't delay! Application forms are necessary. For these and further information about the award, please contact the research and information officer at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
