Food, Nutrition and Climate. Edited by Sir Kenneth Blaxter and Leslie Fowden. Applied Science Publishers, London, 422 pages, illustrated. 1982. Price: &36.00. This book is edited by two prominent scientists, the heads of the Rowett and Rothamsted Research Institutes. It is a well organised symposia1 book with a difference, on an important subject, The difference is that between each chapter, i.e. between each paper as it was delivered, there is a summary of the comments on that chapter by those attending the conference. This device adds to the book’s interest but somehow does not quite come off. It would perhaps have worked better if the original authors had been invited to amend their original texts or add footnotes in the later discussion. This suggestion applies particularly to long complex chapters such as that by Monteith and Scott on ‘Weather and Yield Variation of Crops’. With this amendment, this would be an excellent book, readably covering a wide tranche of world land use and human dietetics: two subjects which are rarely discussed as effectively as they are here within the same covers. Briefly, the chapters run on from climate (resultant soils, crops, yields, pests, marine life), human nutrition, shelter, clothing, to man’s impact on climate. The text is comprehensible. The type is of adequate size and illustrations are plentiful and clear. A good, interesting, well organised book. A. N. DUCKHAM
