France: Omya – GCC The Omey chalk deposit in the Paris Basin and the associated ground calcium carbonate operation gave its name to the company now known as Omya AG (formerly Pluess-Staufer, headquartered at Oftringen, Switzerland). The company acquired title to the St Michel chalk deposits, near Omey and Chalons-sur-Marne, in 1891. Its first processing facility here opened in 1900. To facilitate bulk shipments of GCC, a new rail terminal was installed 5 km from the GCC plant in 1972. Currently, the operation can produce around 500,000 tonnes/y of GCC. The Omyalite-90 grade, produced at Omey, has a brightness of 86-87, which makes it one of the brightest GCC grades derived from chalk. In recent years, Omya has invested substantial sums at Omey in order to produce granular and dustfree formulations in high volumes. Meanwhile, in France and other European markets, Omya has been promoting its masterbatch product Omyalene-102M, offering cost and environmental advantages in a variety of polymer systems.

Japan: Tokyo Denpa – speciality ZnO

Ukraine: SOKA – kaolin

Tokyo Denpa plans to begin commercial-scale production of a speciality grade of zinc oxide before the end of 2007. The company is using a hydrothermal synthesis process to make single crystals of zinc oxide, which can be made into wafers of 5 cm diameter, for use as substrates for gallium nitride light emitting diodes.

Sté Kaolinière Armoricaine (SOKA), a privately owned French mining company, has acquired Plast, owner of the Verboskoe kaolin deposit near Pervomiansk (Nykolaev district). SOKA intends to install new processing facilities here in order to produce kaolin grades suitable for the East European and East Mediterranean sanitary ware, glassfibre and porcelain sectors. SOKA already operates three kaolin mines in the Brittany region of France, with a total capacity of 120,000 tonnes/y.

Saudi Arabia: Ingenia Polymers – plastics masterbatch Ingenia Polymers Corp (of Houston, Texas) is planning to build a large plant at Dammam to produce plastics masterbatches, compounds and superblends. It is somewhat ambiguously reported that the capacity of this plant will be similar to that of its American plants. Ingenia has several plants in the Americas, with differing capacities; its total capacity in this region is of the order of 136,000 tonnes/y. Most of the output from the new Dammam plant will be sold to markets in the Middle East, notably Turkey and Egypt. The plant should be ready for commissioning in November 2008.

Ukraine: Sumy Khimprom – TiO2 For full-year 2006, Sumy Khimprom produced about 35,500 tonnes of TiO2 pigment and it intends to increase output by 24% to 44,000 tonnes in 2007. The company recently installed a new bead mill, with a volume of 1020 litres, at its Sumy plant in northeastern Ukraine. It also launched a new rutile-type pigment, the R-208 grade. India: Phillips – carbon black

Singapore: Toshiki/Nikko Chemicals – pigments for cosmetics

Phillips Carbon Black Ltd (part of the RP Goenka group) has announced a new investment programme, entailing the spending of Rup 2.44 bn (more than $50 M). The company will establish a new 75,000 tonnes/y carbon black plant at a greenfields site in Mundra (Gujarat). It will also raise capacity at its Kochi plant from 35,000 tonnes/y to 85,000 tonnes/y. On completion of this programme, Phillips will have 395,000 tonnes/y of carbon black capacity, including 140,000 tonnes/y at Durgapur (West Bengal) and 95,000 tonnes/y at Vadodara/Baroda (Gujarat). Phillips will also spend Rup 1.06 bn to establish two new power plants, one with a capacity of 12 MW, the other with a capacity of 14 MW.

Toshiki Pigment (part of the Nikko Chemicals group, based in Japan) was one of the first companies to build manufacturing facilities in Singapore in response to encouragement from Singapore’s Economic Development Board, which has been keen to establish a consumer and professional services cluster in the personal care and cosmetics sector. Within this sector, innovation and patents are particularly important; Singapore has one of the best reputations in Asia for intellectual property protection. Toshiki manufactures cosmetic pigments in powder form and will draw on its manufacturing experience at the Utsoniya plant at Tochigi in Japan.
