He came to this country when he was about twenty-three years of age, with Iittle capital except his knowledge and ability. In 1857, he moved his family and business to BrookIyn, and estabIished his dropforge and offIce on the site of the present buiIding. As the city grew, the forge had to be moved away from the residential neighborhood, but the ofice on Pulaski Street has remained in the same location ever since Mr. Haslam set up business in Brooklyn. The present building erected in 1877 repIaced the original structure. When Mr. HasIam retired, his son-inIaw, Mr. Wm. H. H amiIton, became presi-

dent and held that position until his death in 1915, at which time Mr. John J. Douglass, was made president. Upon his retirement in 1934 his brother, AIfred R. DougIass, succeeded him. Frederic M. Haslam took over the management after the death of Mr. AIfred R. DougIass. The Company has aIways striven to maintain the high standard of quality ot the surgical instruments manufactured and soId under the name of Fred Haslam. Mr. HasIam had much to do in encouraging the use of stainless steel in Surgical Instruments. As in the previous war, the Company has again been called upon by the United States Government to supply its needs in its defense problems. Despite this pressure, Fred Haslam & Co. is still maintaining its standard of service and quaIity.
