A method to compute vertical stresses due to pile groups is presented which uses Geddes' integration of the Mimdlin equation. Results obtained using this method are quite different from those obtained using approximate methods. Computed results of stress and settlement for a building in Mexico agree well with observations. 83620~ SOIL MODULUS FOR LATERALLY LOADED BORED PILES IN FOZZOLANA Fenelli, G B; Galateri, C Proc 10th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Stockholm, 15-19 June 1981, V2, P703-708. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1981 The resttlts of horizontal load tests on eight piles of different diameter and with different boundary conditions at the top are reported. The test piles were bored through cohesionless volcanic soils. In five cases the displacement of the shaft was measured using inclincmeters. Back analysis of these results allowed the deterruination of soll modulus distribution with depth and stress level. 83620~ LONG CONTINUOUSLY CAST-IN-SITU FOUNDATION Fenoux, G Y; Houze, G; Hurtado, J Proc 10th I ~ n a t i o m a l Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Stockholm, i~-19 June 1981, V2, P709-712. l~/bl Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1981 The deep foundations of heavy structures subJected to strong horizontal loading, such as earthquakes, necessitates the use of supports of great length and inertial ferce. The practical realization of such suPports implies the use of foundation elements with conti~-ity between adjacent panels provided by armatures. SUch a method of support has been s u g g e s 1 ~ and tested. 836206 LOAD TESTS ON LARGE BORED FILES IN SAND FJellerup, F E Proc lOt~h International Conference on Soll Mechanics and Foundation Emgineering, Stockholm, 15-19 June 1981, V2, P713-716. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1981 Loading tests were carried out on l.Sm diameter bored piles in sand at 2 bridges in Dermmrk. Pumping from deep wells was carried out for one pile in order to assess the effect of lowering the groundwater table. The effect of pile age was also examined. It was concluded that ultimate shaft friction increased considerably with age and with lowering of the groundwater level, and that a considerable amount of creep and shrinkage deformation may occur and seriously influence the evaluation of shaft friction. 836207 POINT PRESSURE V ~ S U S LENGTH AND DIAMs'r~M OF PILES Franke, E Proc lOth International Conference on Soil Mechanics ard Foundation Engineering, Stockholm, 15-19 June 1981, V2, P717-722. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1981 In the last 20 years piles with diameters greater than im have been increasingly used. Usual definitions to determine the ultimate load of such piles are useless. Based upon a critical al~raisal of recent knowledge about
the dependence of bearing behavlour on dlameter, length and settlement, new rules introduced in the German Codes of Practice are shown. 836208 FRICTION BORED PILES OF HIGHER BE~21NG CAPACYTY Grigcryan, A A; Fedorov, B S; Smorodinov, M Y Proc lOth International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Stockholm, 15-19 June 1981, V2, F723-726. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1981 Static loading tests have demonstrated the pour performance of friction bored piles in soft soils: soilbase failure is not continuous bxr~ is rather a series of periodic failures, leading to intermittent settlement progress. A new pile design to give s higher bearing capacity is proposed which involves soil compaction at the bottom of the hole before concreting. 836209 INSTALLATION OF PYLES FOR } 4 ~ I ~ ~fRUCPURES IN THE RED SEA Hagenaar, .T; van den Berg, J Proc 10th International Conference on Soll Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Stockholm, 15-i 9 June 1981, V2, >727-730. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1981 Recently, piled structures have been designed as an alternative to block~olls for marine structure foundations on continental shelves, q~nis paper discusses the geological factors and soil parameters to be anticipated for the design and installation of piles for offshore projects alOng the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. A case record is presented for a project, where precast Irestressed concrete piles were driven and load tested. The pile load tests carried out confirmed the accuracy of the required driving sets, determined by the wave equation analysis. 836210 RESPONSE OF A PILE GROUP TO C O ~ I N E D AY.I~L AND LATERAL LOADING Holloway, D M; Moriwski, Y; ~tevens, J B Proc lOth International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Fot~ndation Engineering, Stockholm, 15-19 June 1981, V2, P731-734. Publ Rotterdam: A. A. Balkema, 1981 An eight-pile group in sand was laterally loaded to failm'e under constant axial load to investigate the response. The deform3tion ard load transfer characteristics were compared with a rigorous numerical model. It is concluded that the load transfer behaviour observed differs substantially from the published criteris which were applied. Comparison of the field measurements with the computer model predictions shows that predictions could be imprc~ed by relaxirg the pile cap fixity restraint and strengthening and stiffening the modelled soil response. 836211 BEHA\qOb'R OF A FLENIBLE PILED FOUND#TYON Hooper, J A; Levy, .T r Proc lOth Interretional Conference on Soil Mechanics and 9oundatlon Engineering, Stockholm, 15-19 June 1981, V2, P735-740. Publ Rotterdam: A. %. Balkem~, 1981 Detailed settlement records h~ve been obtained over an eight year period relating to a buildins supported on urder-reamed piles, with a large plan area and flexible superstructure. It is demonstrated how relatively simple methods of elastic analysis can be used to c:~lcul~te settle-
