Preface

From molecules to molecular biological systems and molecular materials: The role of molecular interactions and recognition A Collection of Papers Presented at the IXth International Conference on Molecular Spectroscopy, Wrocław – La˛dek Zdrój, Poland, 12–16 September 2007 This volume contains the Proceedings of the Ninth International Conference on Molecular Spectroscopy: ‘‘From Molecules to Molecular Biological Systems and Molecular Materials: The Role of Molecular Interactions and Recognition”, held in Wrocław – La˛dek Zdrój, Poland, during 12–16 September 2007. The purpose of this series of conferences, held every two years, is to discuss recently obtained results in the development of different branches of molecular spectroscopy and their wide applications in chemistry, physics, biology, medicine and industry. The first conference, held in 1991, dealt with vibrational spectroscopy and its applications in the study of the properties and structures of molecules. The second conference concentrated on spectroscopy of the solid state, liquid crystals and phase transitions. The third and fourth conferences focussed on the application of molecular spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry to the study of the properties and structures of molecular materials and the role of molecular interactions and molecular recognition in the creation of molecular materials from molecules. The fifth conference extended the area of application to encompass also molecular biological systems. The sixth and later conferences focussed on the role of non-covalent interactions and molecular recognition in supramolecular systems. The present conference continued the theme of examining the role of molecular interactions and recognition in a wide variety of systems. The meeting was well attended, with around 35 spectroscopists from Belgium, China, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Ukraine and USA, as well as about 75 scientists from Poland who actively work in the subject area of the conference. If, as the organisers hope, the conference was successful, thanks are due to all the participants for their contributions.

The organisers are grateful for financial support from the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław, the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Wrocław, the Marshal’s Office of Lower Silesia Voivodship, Wrocław, and Bruker Polska. Finally, the editors express their thanks to the authors who contributed the papers published in this volume, which we hope is as representative as possible of the conference.
