Letter to the Editor From the Chair of the Asian Journal of Psychiatry Managing Board

The Asian Journal of Psychiatry has been in the making since the launch of the Asian Federation of Psychiatric Associations at the world congress at Cairo in 2005. The Asian continent houses over 60% of the world’s population. It is estimated that around 500 million people suffer from mental illnesses and neurological diseases in Asia. The resources and mental health providers are indeed limited. In the face of this magnitude of needs and limited resources, significant gaps exit impacting many aspects of the population’s health and wellbeing. This Journal is confident of bridging the identified knowledge gap between the application and transfer of research findings and clinical practice to and from the Asian continent and the rest of the world. In spite of the very renowned academic centers of mental health and neurosciences in Asia and the presence of renowned psychiatrists in Asia and psychiatrist of Asian ancestry in the world over, there is a stark absence of an international Asian Journal of Psychiatry with an impact factor. Thus much of original work in Asia has limited avenues to exposure.

The Asian Journal of Psychiatry with its distinguished editorial team Lead by Professor Keshavan of Harvad University whose ancestry hails from Asia and an editorial board spanning the five broad regions of Asia that covers over 40 countries, together with the global psychiatrists of Asian ancestry, is well poised to bridge this identified gap. A further uniqueness of this international journal is its access to expert review and reporting in every issue of the important regional work, including the work in non-English regional journals, by a team of reputed regional editors from all the Asian regions. A another unique aspect of the journal is the section Asian Pearl’s in each issue which will have two translated quality scientific literature from the regional non English journals selected and received from regional editors and prepared by editor of Asian Pearls section of the Asian Journal. The Asian Journal is seen as an important component in achieving the Asian Federation of Psychiatric association’s vision of excellence in Asian Psychiatry. I invite you to share and celebrate the creation of this journal which is to be an important land mark of the 21st century in psychiatry.
