Portable terminal The Dataport 5 portable data capture terminal from Data Recognition has been adopted by BAT for use with their direct order entry system. The terminal uses optical mark recognition technology and incorporates a clip-on alphanumeric keyboard to allow local programming. It can also be programmed remotely through a telephone line. A downline programming facility enables entire programs to be transferred from a central computer to the terminal via a modem or an acoustic coupler. A rechargeable battery-powered acoustic coupler housed in a conventional briefcase allows the terminal to operate when no mains power is available. Each device can store up to 132 000 characters and can be linked to printers, POS terminals, bar-code wands etc. Programming can be carried out in BASIC or using a general-purpose application pro-

message security, forms generation and forms service. The CP3680 can support up to 36 eight-line asynchronous or twoline asynchronous/synchronous adapters, handling up to 288 multidrop communications lines with an aggregate data transfer rate of 100 000 characters per second. It can handle 2000 stations and 2 000 transaction types. Users requiring continuous online operation can install a CP 3680-01 'hot standby' redundant processor along with the 3680. If the active processor should fail, the standby system will take control of t h e network and all input/output interfaces to the host. (Burroughs Machines Ltd., Heathrow House,
A 2780/3780 emulation package has been announced by Alpha Microsystems that allows their computers to communicate with any other machine that supports these protocols. The package is software driven through a standard AM310 communications controller board and may be used in any multitasking environment. Transmission speeds of up to 9 600 bit/s are possible over dedicated lines or the public switched telephone network. Options include ASCII/EBCDIC translation, termination of received records by carriage-return/linefeed pairs and their removal on transmission. These and other parameters are specified in an initialization file which is called up at the start of a transmission. Multiple parameter files may be maintained for systems with a variety of different remote sites. The software also produces diagnostic reports on sessions, enabling the operator to monitor transmission and communication quality. (Alpha Microsystems UK

Front-end network management A front-end data communications system for the management of networks has been announced by Burroughs. Adding a CP3680 to a configuration of B 2000, B 3000 or B4000 computers will shift the operating and management workload from the host computer to the front-end system. Only a small interface program remains within the host and the host's system software does not need to be altered. The system can support up to four host computers, allowing any terminal in the network to communicate with an application program on any host. The basic unit provides 256 kbyte of errorcorrecting main memory and 20 Mbyte of disc storage. An integrated message-control system offers message queuing, message routing,
