CONFERENCE REPORT

Denmark FSOS Conference 2013 – Transition and cooperation in orthopaedic clinical pathways The annual two-day conference arranged by the Danish Orthopaedic Nursing Association (FSOS) took place at Hotel and Conference Center Trinity, Fredericia, Denmark 20–21. March 2013. More than 140 orthopaedic nurses from all over Denmark and even a few from neighboring Sweden were gathered to discuss Transition and cooperation in orthopaedic clinical pathways. We experienced a fantastic atmosphere with active participation from delegates – not only during discussions following the presentations, but also through networking during the breaks. The exhibition with 9 companies contributed to and inspired the professional discussions. A call for abstracts had been sent out for the very first time in the history of the FSOS Conference. Surprisingly and overwhelmingly we received 21 abstracts, which resulted in 6 oral presentations and 15 poster presentations. The best paper and poster were awarded with an annual subscription to the International Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing (IJOTN). The best paper also received 100 € funded by IJOTN. The winner of best paper was very grateful and pointed out that the award shows that orthopaedic nursing research is very important and is taken seriously. One of the workshops during the conference focused on How to compose an abstract and how to prepare a poster. The delegates met this new initiative with enthusiasm and we hope to receive many new abstracts next year. Another new initiative was keynote speakers from abroad; Lisa Brown from the UK spoke about

Think Pink – a pressure ulcer prevention initiative and Ami Hommel from Sweden spoke about Best practice for patients with a hip fracture. The Danish nurses favorably evaluated these presentations though very good even as they were not presented in their native language. The Danish Health and Medicine Authority has begun to develop new National Clinical Guidelines. Most of the members of these working groups are doctors because the authority has not previously included nurses. It has been a significant challenge to get nurses involved in the groups and the success of FSOS in achieving this is to be applauded. Nurses from three working groups presented their experiences of working on the National Clinical Guidelines and they also presented some preliminary results. This conference strengthens the belief in the importance of brining orthopaedic nurses together to develop and exchange new knowledge and ideas to improve the quality of nursing. The committee members will use this enthusiasm to arrange next year’s FSOS Conference 2014. The theme is not yet decided, but the conference will take place on 18 and 19 March 2014 at the Trinity Hotel and Conference Center, Fredericia, Denmark. The deadline for the submission of Abstracts is 1st September 2013. Please send your abstract by e-mail to [email protected] We hope to see you in Denmark next year.
