DyStar’s new brilliant yellow dye Clariant’s new red-violet pigments Clariant has launched two new redviolet pigments, suitable for use in aqueous and solvent-based paints. They are Hostaperm Red Violet ERX and ERX-WD. These pigments can be used with pearlescent and metallic shades or for tinting solid shades. Paint & Coatings Industry (PCI), Mar 2003, 19 (3), 102

Colourtone Masterbatch launches Vynacol – a new concept for rigid PVC Normally, colour is added to rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) via liquid colour concentrates, colour dispersions or flexible PVC-based masterbatches, but these solutions entail the use of plasticisers which give rise to processing problems and tend to degrade the quality of the final product. Now Colourtone Masterbatch Ltd (of the UK) has devised a technology to make the world’s first polymer-specific colour masterbatch for rigid PVC. The product is called Vynacol and the manufacturing technology uses processing aids to help the melt to flow smoothly, while lubricants reduce friction between the polymer and the pigment. New reds & yellows from Dominion Dominion Colour (part of the Kikuchi Colour group) is displaying a number of new products at this year’s Asia Pacific Coatings Show, including: DCC 1166 (Pigment Yellow 65), DCC 7097 (Pigment Yellow 97), DCC 7174 and DCC 7274 (Pigment Yellow 74), DCC 7251 (Pigment Yellow 151) and DCC 2812 (Pigment Red 112). DCC 1166 delivers superior opacity and is the reddest shade within Dominion’s range of Hansa Yellow products. DCC 7174 and DCC 7274 are greenish-

DyStar has added Levafix Brilliant Yellow CA, a new brilliant greenishyellow dye to its Levafix CA range. The new product has high colour strength, is non-photochromic and complies with all major ecological standards. It can be used for binary and trichromatic shades in all standard processes. Ferro’s holographic pigments Ferro (of Cleveland, OH) has announced the worldwide launch of a unique range of holographic pigments. Microembossed aluminium foil on the pigment particle surface helps to create a rainbow of colours. Ferro suggests using these pigments to impart a multi-colour glitter appearance for transport materials, such as crystal polystyrene and injection-moulded or extruded polypropylene, at temperatures below 385°C. Fuji Xerox synthesises chameleon pigment Scientific researchers at Fuji Xerox (in Kanagawa, Japan) have synthesised a “chameleon pigment”: a new “smart material”, which mimics the skin pigmentation patterns of animals such as the squid and the octopus. The material is a polymer based on N-isopropylacrylamide, which switches from a coloured state to a transparent state when its environment changes. The change can be triggered by the presence of certain chemicals, light level, acidity and/or by changes in the ambient temperature, light and acidity. High Performance Plastics, Mar 2003, 10

Huber’s ATH with particle shape engineered for faster pultrusion Huber Engineered Materials has developed an alumina trihydrate (ATH) flame retardant for pultrusion and other thermoset processing: MoldX-A3. This product has a particle shape that reduces pulling forces and gives higher loadings and faster line speeds in pultrusion. The unique structure facilitates good viscosity control and wet-out at high loadings in all thermoset compounds. MoldX-A3 is also well suited to resin transfer moulding and sheet and bulk moulding compounds. Plastics News, 17 Apr 2003 (Website: http://www.plasticsnews.com)

Plaza of Legacy’s paint to cure sick building syndrome contains apatitecoated TiO2 Plaza of Legacy Co (of Japan) recently launched a new paint which is claimed to deal with some of the causes of “sick building syndrome”. The paint contains a relatively high loading of TiO2, coated with apatite. The TiO2 functions not only as a white pigment and opacifier, but also as a photocatalyst, with the catalytic action enhanced by apatite. Significant levels of formaldehyde in the ambient air are believed to be characteristic of “sick-building syndrome.” In a room painted with Plaza’s new paint, tests have demonstrated that formaldehyde levels in the air can be reduced from 0.015 ppm to 0.041 ppm within 40 days of applying the paint. Plaza has set Yen 700 M as the target for sales of the new paint in its first year. Nikkei Net, 25 Apr 2003 (Website: http://www.nni.nikkei.co.jp/)

Shanghai Yipin’s anti-corrosion pigments with ATPP Shanghai Yipin has added aluminium tripolyphosphate rust prevention pigments to its product portfolio. These are white pigments, which are non-polluting and provide double the efficacy levels of red lead and zinc chrome yellow pigments in terms of rust prevention. They also offer good weather-fastness and heat resistance, as well as oil and seawater resistance. APCJ, Asia Pacific Coatings Journal, Apr 2003, 16 (2), C8
