Extruders
Laboratory extruder maximizes control
APV Baker’s laboratory extruder.
APV Baker has introduced a new generation of laboratory-scale twin-screw extruders. The company says that features to maximize control, the acquisition and management of data, and ease of operation have been developed for applications in thermoplastics compounding and masterbatch, among others. According to the company, an increased screw speed capability of up to 1000 rpm promotes exact replication of laboratory
work to industrial scales, where the trend is to run at a higher rpm. This also extends the range of materials that can be handled. Full data logging allowing continuous monitoring of all product control parameters is an option. InTouch data acquisition software is provided by Wonderware. A touch-screen terminal gives precise, immediate response. APV Baker laboratory twin-screw extruders are available in a range of processing
lengths from 15:1 to 40:1. They are designed for simple operation with a clam-shell barrel design allowing easy cleaning, optimization of the process, and rapid change of screw configurations. The company adds that a more compact drive arrangement has been introduced that incorporates an in-line servo motor and planetary gearbox. Extruder electrics are now housed in a separate terminal box on the rear of the machine for improved access; a simple, modular telescopic base has been introduced to suit all length variants. A swing-away feeder support for improved operator convenience permits emptying and cleaning of the feeder away from the extruder; for improved operator safety, fully insulated barrel covers are fitted as standard. Access to the gearbox output shafts has been improved for easier agitator shaft removal and refitting. The range of purpose built ancillaries includes a new chill roll for powder coatings and reprographic toners, constructed from stainless steel and with a swing-open nip roll for improved cleaning access; and strand lines for thermoplastics operations. Full range of continuous mixers B&P Process Equipment Co. offers twin screw continuous compounding extruders in a 19-450mm screw diameter range. The CT Series of high torque/high speed twin screw extruders offer standard machine diameters from 25mm to 133mm and L/D ratios of up to 52:1. The screw and barrel components are segmented. In addition to the CT Series, the company offers the PC Series of high free volume ‘clam shell’ continuous compounding machines. Standard machine sizes are from 15mm to 160mm, with L/D ratios of up to 50:1. B&P adds
that the modular barrel and segmented screw design with individual paddles and hexagonal shafts for simple screw design changes. The company says that it twin screw extruders are tough and able to take on virtually any compounding job. For processing heat- and shear-sensitive compounds, the company also offers the CK Series of continuous kneaders. The company says that it has an enhanced design that allows screw speeds up to 1000 rpm and L/D ratios of 10-19.

According to B&P, there are a wide range of production rates available, from laboratory size (30mm) to production (220mm). The company believes that its strengths lie in the technical expertise of its staff. B&P also offers testing facilities at its technical centre in Michigan, USA.
