HANDB/)OK OF STATISTICAL TABLES, by D o n a l d

B. OweD. 580 pages, 6 x 9 in. Reading (Mass.), Addison-Wesley Publishing Co., lm .. 1962. Price, $12.50. Over 100 tables of functions used in statistics are published in this new handbook. Collected from m a n y sources, most of the tables were computed at Sandia Corporation and are printed directly from the output of digital computers, 1o reduce error as much as possible. In addition to the usual tables~ this collection includes: noncentral I and chi-square; various multivariate normal tables including distribution functions. oftset circle probabilities, quadratic forms arm characteristic roots; confidence limits on fun{tions of binomial parameters; and tables for determining sample size. Practicing statisticians, quality control people, industrial engineers and research workers will find the handbook extremely useful. FIRST SUPI'IEMENT TO TIlE MANUAl, "ExPERIMENTAl METIII)DS IN COMBUSTION RESEARCH,"

edited b y J . Surugue. 310 pages, diagrams, illustrations, 6] x 9~ in. Oxford, Pergamon Press l . t d 1962. Price, $10.00. Eight papers comprise this first supplement to the loose-leaf A G A R D manual: two on analogical methods; one each on combustion chamber models, detonation, shock tubes, and turbulent flames; and two on flame propagation. Each new section is preceded by an editor's note, and a new table of contents (to replace the original one) shows where each new section is to be inserted in the original volume. This procedure is a highly sensible one, for it enables the reader to keep his material up-to-date without buying a whole new edition eve W time something new is added.

PI.ASTICS EXTRUSION TECttNOLOGY, by Allan L.

(?;rift. 278 pages, diagrams, illustrations, 6 x 9 in. New York, Reinhold Publishing Corp., 1962. Price, $7.95. In this up-to-date presentation of extrusion technology, the author discusses products as well as processes, and covers the construction and operation of both extruders and auxiliary extruder equipment. Separate chapters deal with each of the seven major areas of extrusion--pipe, sheet, wire and cable covering, e t c . - - a n d include in detail, tests, specifications and standards, and

special techniques. At the end of each chapter, there is a unique "problems and solutions" chart that helps solve problems arising during the manufacturing operation. The book includes a discussion of extrusion fundamentals and a description of some unusual extruders, plus a brief market survey. There is also an extensive bibliography at the end. FUNlJAMEN'I'ALSOF EI.ECTRI/HTY AND MAGNETISM,

by Arthur F. Kip. 302 pages,, diagrams, 6~ x 91 in. New York, McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., 1962. Price, $7.95. This volume represents a first course in classical electric and magnetic theory. The basic laws are related to experimental observations, and the theoretical development is connected with experimental phenomena at many points. On the theoretical side, considerable effort has been made to display the remarkable economy of description of the basic phenomena of electromagnetism made possible by the use nf Maxwell's equations. In the development of the subject matter, a knowledge of only elementary calculus and simple vectors has been assumed. Special sections in the early chapters emphasize the connection between mathematical descriptions and physical problems. Numerous examples arc given, both in the body of the text and in selected problems at the ends of chapters. BASIC MATERIALS AND PHENOMENA. VOI.IIMt, 3 OF METALI.URC, Y AND FUEI.S, edited by H. M.

Finniston and .J.P. Howe. 476 pages, diagrams, illustrations, 6 x 9 in. Oxford, Pergamon Press Ltd., 1961. Price, $15.00. MErAI I.I'R(;~' OF NUCLEAR REACI{}R (~.{)~Ih~NENI'S. V()II"~IE 4 ()F METAIL.IR(;Y ANI) FUEl s,

edited by tt. M. Finniston and J. P. Howe 436 pages, diagrams, illustrations. 6 x 9 in. Oxford. Pergamon Press lad., 1961. Price, $15.00. These two volumes are the latest addition to Series V of Progress in Nuclear Energy. Volume 3 contains 28 papers divided into the following five categories: Materials (9 papers); Physical Metallurgy and Solid State Physics Irradiation Effects (14 papers); Imperfections and Diffusion (2 papers); Neutron Diffraction (I paper); and Structure and Properties of Metals and Compounds of Nuclear Interest (2 papers).
