These can also be combined with additives such as scrubs, actives and pigments. Dr Straetmans showcased several products at the show. These included SymbioSolv Clear, a new PEG-free solubilizer for creating clear, alcohol-free, water-based cosmetics. The solubilizer is 100% derived from natural and GMO-free vegetable sources, which makes it ideal for natural cosmetic products. Naturalis specializes in the development of biologically active molecules encapsulated inside small vesicles, made of special nonionic surfactants (polyglycerol esters) and cholesterol, which function as a delivery system called Niosome. Niosomes are structurally similar to liposomes in having a bilayer; however, the materials used in their preparation make them more stable and thus they offer advantages over liposomes. Niosomes are reported to have more penetrating capability than previous preparations of emulsions and, according to the company, can thus improve the bioavailability of the active ingredient to the site of action within the skin. Chemicals in soap can cause male infertility, claim scientists Germany-based scientists at the Centre of Advanced European Studies and Research have found that 30 out of 96 common household chemicals directly impact human sperm by disrupting the catsper protein. This disruption damages the human sperm’s swimming behaviour and causes it to prematurely release the vital enzymes needed to penetrate and fertilize the egg cell. These chemicals are present in common household products such as soap, toothpaste and plastic toys. In test-tube studies, the catsper reaction was triggered at low concentrations of the chemicals. Researchers believe they have developed a new method of testing the impact of household chemicals on human sperm, which will help Europe’s regulators in deciding whether to ban or restrict use of certain products.
