GI.ll CORRERATION BETWEEN THE GENERATION OF OXYGEN RADICALS AND THE KILLING OF BACTERIA BY PACIFIC OYSTER HEMOCYTES Katsuyoshi Mori, Keisuke Takahashi Faculty of Agriculture, Tohoku University 1-1, Tsutsumidori Amamiyamachi, Aoba-ku, Sendai 981, Japan We confirmed the generation of active oxygen species, i.e. superoxide anion radical (02-) and hydrogen peroxide (H202), by hemocytes of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, on stimulation with bacteria. We examined the microbicidal activities of the oyster hemocytes under aerobic and anaerobic conditions against ten species of bacteria. Three species including Staphylococcus aureus were not killed normally by anaerobic hemocytes. In addition, the killing of Escherichia coli under aerobic condition was inhibitedby scavengers of oxygen radicals. Evidence obtained in our experiments suggests that a mechanism depending on active oxygen species for the killing of some bacteria exists in hemocytes of the Pacific oyster.
