G2.P1 //2-MICROGLOBULIN-LIKE
MOLECULE
IN AMPHIOXUS
Hongwei Zhang Department of Biology, Shandong University, Jinan 250100, China B2-microglobulin-like molecule in the extract of Amphioxus (Branchiostoma belcheri tsingtauense) has been detected by using immunodiffusion and immunoelectrophoretic analysis. And the/32-microglobulin- like molecule bearing cells were observed by immunofluorescence labelling methods. These results suggest that Amphioxus may possess primitive humoral immunity.
G2.P2 PURIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF AN ANTIBACTERIAL FROM LARVAL HAEMOLYMPH OF PIERIS RAPAE
PROTEIN
Sung-Moon Yoe, In-Seok Bang, Eun-Jeong Cho Department of Biology, Dankook University, Cheonan 330-714, Korea Fifth instar larvae of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae were found to contain an inducible antibacterial activity in their haemolymph. This immune reaction was induced by primary infection with viable Escherichia coil K-12. Acidic electrophoresis of immune haemolymph followed by an antibacterial assay on the gel was identified at least two or three antibacterial proteins. These proteins were separated and one was purified by ion-exchange chromatograph, reverse phase FPLC and gel electroelution. This substance is peptide estimated 4 kD and named Hinnavin I. Five different bacterial species were tested for their susceptibility to Hinnavin I. Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, and Bacillus megaterium of these species were extremely sensitive, but Bacillus thuringiensis which is known to be pathogenic to insects was resistant in inhibition zone assay. We will discuss this peptide.
