rather a guide to current trends. As this book is written by an author who has studied the will also the
theoretical and practical aspects of afEnity chromatography for many years, it certainly be a welcome heIp not only to specialists in research laboratories, but to technicians and to undergraduate and graduate students, espeeidiy because price is relatively Iow. JAROSLAVA

Ges c~onruzogr~@y wirh glass capillary columzrs, by W. Jennings, Academic Press, New York, San Francisco, London, 1978, VII f 184 pp., price f 12.80, USS 19.75, ISBN o-12-3843XL2. A very timely and vaiuabIe volume on a subject which has become a major feature of gas chromatography arising from my originating work in the late Wties. Glass capillaries are now used by most workers in the field who are interested in the analysis of complex mixtures by gas chromatography across the whole field of chemistry_ The book covers well all the important aspects of the technique in the context of a useful Grst introductory chapter on gas chromatography in general. The di5cdt problem of preparing the raw glass capiilary tube for effective coating with stationary phase liquids of differing polarity is covered weli by a good experimental attack which recognises that many facets are poorly understood in terms of the basic science invoived. The Iast three chapters on sample preparation, materials of low voMiJ.ity and applications round off the presentation in a way in which the practising gas chromatographer is given ackxpate appreciation of the power of the method. The four appendices contain much useful tabulated data of value in selecting the most useful columns for particuIar anafytical problems.
