Foreword Gastric and Esophageal Cancer 2017

This issue of the Surgical Oncology Clinics of North America discusses esophageal and gastric cancer. The guest editor is David H. Ilson, MD, PhD. Dr Ilson is an attending physician and member of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr Ilson is recognized nationally for his special interest and expertise in treating patients who have upper gastrointestinal cancers, particularly those with esophageal and gastric cancer. His research focus is in esophageal and gastric cancer, studying new agents to treat advanced disease and evaluating novel agents in combined modality therapy to treat locally advanced disease. Dr Ilson is a member of the GI Committees of the National Clinical Research Groups, such as the Cancer and Leukemia Group B and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. He is also a member of the Upper GI Cancer Guidelines Committee of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and Senior Committee Member of the Intergroup Esophageal and Gastric Cancer Task Force Committee. Dr Ilson has invited an outstanding group of experts in the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal and gastric cancer. This group has included an article on novel targeted therapies for esophagogastric cancer by Drs Maron and Catenacci from the Section of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center. Contributions by international colleagues include the article entitled, “The Asian Perspective on the Surgical and Adjuvant Management of Esophagogastric Cancer,” by Drs Kurokawa and Sasako from Japan. Last, the emerging role in gastric cancer for minimally invasive surgery is discussed by Drs Cassidy, Gholami, and Strong from the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. I would like to thank Dr Ilson for organizing this outstanding group of authors on the subject of esophageal and gastric cancer. This extensive issue of the Surgical
