China Unicom places massive SIM order China Unicom, the second largest mobile telecommunications operator in China, has selected Oberthur Card Systems to deliver 7.5 million 32k high-end cards during the first half of 2003. The deal is one of Oberthur’s most important SIM card orders to date, and comes as the company announced steady financial results for 2002. China Unicom had a total of 64 million subscribers at the end of 2002, more than 50% more than in 2001. The company operates both a GSM and a CDMA network and offers a complete telecommunications solution – fixed line, internet and mobile. The cards will be manufactured and personalized in Oberthur Card Systems’ Shenzhen Plant, which is ISO 9001 version 2000 certified. They are based on Oberthur’s SIMphonIC 32k range, which has been adapted to address the specific market needs of the Chinese operator. Meanwhile, Oberthur Card Systems announced its 2002 year-end results, showing a reduction in revenue, but falling within earlier indications. Sales for 2002 amounted to 440.1 million , down from 484.1 million in 2001. The company put the 9.1% decline mainly down to a refocusing of its operations on profitable businesses. The second half of the company’s year saw a pick up in performance mainly thanks to lower purchasing prices of components and a staff reduction representing more than 10% of the total headcount over the fiscal year. Breaking down the results into the various business segments highlights that almost all sectors were negatively affected. The only exception came in its microprocessor card range, where payment cards rose 6.7% on 2001 sales to 78.9 million. Contact: Wais Wasiri at Oberthur Card Systems, Tel: + 33 6 10 63 01 60, email:

Gemplus supplies O2 Ireland… O2 Ireland has selected Gemplus to supply 32k SIM cards that will support an integrated customer care menu with roaming management, believed to be a first in Ireland. The customer care package is available through a SIM ToolKit menu in the SIM, which provides easy access to account management functions. This enables the subscriber to selfmanage certain issues and alleviates the need for them to contact the customer call centre. According to Trevor Burns, sales manager, Gemplus Ireland: “By connecting the SIM into the client server architecture, Gemplus is able to provide O2 Ireland with a complete service that we can manage on their behalf. The Roaming Package means that they can provide regular updates to the preferred roaming list over the air.”
…and supplies digital signature solution to SFR Meanwhile, Gemplus has delivered a secure SIM-based mobile commerce solution to SFR, the second largest operator in France, as part of its wireless PKI commercial pilot, SECURISIGN. Launched in November 2002, this pilot allows selected subscribers to pay for purchases without transmitting their credit card details over the network and to receive an electronic receipt as proof of purchase. Subscribers can purchase products and services from many SFR merchant partners, such as Interflora and Allociné. Suppliers to the pilot include Gemplus, Atos Origin and Baltimore Technologies. Atos Origin was the project integrator and supplied the mSign interface and the hosted signature and payment solutions. Baltimore Technologies provided its wireless PKI software, Telepathy, which enabled the integration of digital certificates and public key cryptography. Gemplus, meanwhile, provided the SIM PKI signature application, 64K GemXplore 'Xpresso Java SIM cards, the transaction gateways (GemConnect OTA and GemConnect On-line) and the signature validation gateway (e-verifier). The retailer is able to send a summary of the order to the user who then validates the transaction by generating a secure and personal digital signature (using a private code) from the SIM. This is then verified by the e-verifier signature verification gateway. Contact: Jane Strachey at Gemplus, Tel: +33 4 42 36 46 61, email:

in brief • SSP Solutions has secured US$4.8 million in new US Department of Defense (DoD) orders for its digital identity authentication, administration and authorization software and firmware. The software includes SSP Profile Manager, a lifecycle management tool for controlling digital credentials and tokens, while the firmware will be delivered on SSP’s Universal Secure Access smart card, which is based on a chip from Forte. The Forte chip design enables both ISO and USB interfaces • Oberthur Card Systems has deployed the first GAIT smart card in Latin America on the Entel Wireless Network in Bolivia. GAIT smart cards are designed to allow users access to GSM, AMPS and TDMA networks. The particular brand of GAIT smart card provided by Oberthur is the SIMphonIC TDMA Access. • The National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec) in Thailand has said it is ready to make contactless smart cards, but requires funding to get its operation off the ground. Nectec has urged the government to provide 770 million baht for the purchase of machinery. The group claims its cards would cost a an estimated 65 baht, compared with between 100 and 120 baht for an imported alternative. The annual production capacity of the plant is projected at six million a year. • Infineon Technologies announced its results for the first quarter of its 2003 fiscal year, ended 31 December 2002. The company had revenues of 1.52 billion, an increase of 10% and 47% year-on-year. The revenue increase was mainly driven by higher demand for memory products and semiconductors used in mobile phones. In November last year, Infineon merged its Wireless Solutions and Security and Chip Card ICs groups into a single group called Secure Mobile Solutions. Looking ahead Infineon expects a seasonal weakness in demand and continued strong pricing pressure in the SIM card ICs market. However, for the second half of the year the supplier expects an overall market improvement. • Datakey, a developer of smart card solutions for securing e-business, and Datacard Group have signed a reseller agreement, enabling Datacard to integrate and sell Datakey Model 330 cryptographic smart cards, CIP client software and Datakey smart card readers as part of its secure authentication solution for enterprise ID. Datakey’s technology adheres to industry standards and delivers a high level of security, demonstrated through certifications it has achieved, such as FIPS 140-1 Level 2.
