GENERi L NEWS
ECONOMIC REVIEW A solid increase in first
quarter economic growth has put the United States’ gross domestic product at 1.7 per cent on a quarteron-quarter basis. This is far higher than many forecasts. This strong growth has come despite bad weather and a government shutdown in early 1996. Much of the growth has been attributed to an increase in consumer spending and an unexpected surge in business investment. Business investment increased at a 12.1 per cent annual rate. This compares with a 3.1 per cent pace in the last quarter of 1995. Despite the good news, the US government will hold to its prediction of a 2.2 per cent growth rate for the year. Economists believe that the US economy will experience only a modest expansion dur ing the year. It is thought that the first quarter results represent a rebound from a particularly poor final quarter in 1995. This is reflected in employment growth data, which has slowed markedly when compared with the first few months of 1996. US factory orders have ended the first quarter on a strong note. March orders rose 1.5 per cent to US$309 billion from a revised US$304 billion in February. This is the first increase since December 1995. Focusing on Canada, it is thought that the strikes which occurred during March, will have little effect on the near term economic outlook. GDP for the year has been revised upward to 1.9 per cent. Although the Canadian economy is slug-

gish. it is believed that the economy will pick up towards the end of the year. Growth is projected to reach 2.8 per cent next year. The factory report for February indicated an increase in unfilled orders and inventories, while shipments and new orders declined.
