microsatellite markers, five specific of gilthead seabream (SaGT41a, SaGT41b, SaGT31, SaGT32, SaGT26) (Batargias et al., 1999) and one unspecific from Pagellus bogaraveo (PbMS2) (Stockley et al., 2000). An animal model was applied on data base using as fixed factors tank and culture system (intensive or mesocosms). The estimates of heritabilities were 0.20 ± 0.08, 0.21± 0.09, 0.58± 0.12 and 0.11 ± 0.07 for weight, length and visceral and muscle fats, respectively.

respectively. Head kidney index was not significantly different between H and L groups, but sex was. High corticosterone responders were predominantly male, while low responders were female or intersex. doi:10.1016/j.aquaculture.2007.07.149

A selection program in river catfish for increased filet yield has been initiated in Vietnam. 80 males were mated with 94 females of river catfish from 3 different hatcheries to establish 101 full-sib families. The broodstocks were collected from different farms in South Vietnam where fingerlings caught from the wild were stocked. Eggs were incubated separately and fry were reared separately until tagging. Fingerlings were individually marked by floy tags, then communally stocked in one pond, and fed by commercial pelleted feeds. After 187 days of culture and at the average fish size of about 0.8 kg, about 10 individuals per family were sampled, and body weight, body length, body height, body circumference, fillet weight and fillet yield (%) were recorded. The linear animal mixed model and restricted maximum likelihood method were used to estimate the variance and covariance of recorded traits in order to acquire heritability and genetic correlation. The genetic correlation for fillet yield with body weight, body length, body height, body circumference and fillet weight were 0.44, 0.42, 0.36, 0.48 and 0.72, respectively. The estimated medium heritabilites for body weight, body length, body height, body circumference and fillet weight were 0.30, 0.24, 0.29, 0.28 and 0.27 respectively. A low heritability, 0.13, for fillet yield was found.

The aim of this study was to investigate the inheritance of adrenal hyperplasia and low cortisol response using backcross and gynogenetic progeny of heterozygote carriers of common carp. The inbred strains used in this experiment were E4 (XX, normal), E5 (XX, adrenal hyperplasia) and E7 (XX, adrenal hyperplasia). Heterozygote carriers were produced by crossing E4 with E5 (E4E5: XX). E4E5 females were backcrossed on E5 and E7 animals (BC), or reproduced by gynogenesis to produce doubled haploids (DH). Progeny were raised and at 6 months subjected to a net confinement stressor. Fish were sacrificed after 1 hour net-confinement and blood was collected to determine cortisol and corticosterone values. Fish were dissected and after sex determination, gonads and head kidney were weighted to determine gonad-somatic index and head kidney-somatic index. Values for cortisol and head kidney index showed a continuous distribution in BC and DH progeny. Values for corticosterone, on the other hand, showed a very clear segregation pattern, consistent with a single locus model. There was a highly significant difference in mean cortisol level between high and low corticosterone responders in BC and DH progeny groups. Mean values for High corticosterone responders in the 3 groups BC-5, BC-7 and DH were respectively: corticosterone 1706, 1760 and 1357 ng/ml, and for cortisol: 19.5, 24 and 21.4 ng/ml. For low responders values were: corticosterone 1.26, 1.11 and 0.63 ng/ml, and for cortisol: 67.7, 105 and 61.4 ng/ml
