NUCLEAR METERS SOILS, ASPHALT

FOR TESTING

New instruments for testing soil and aggregates (the NIC-5 Series Nuclear Moisture-Density Meters) are announced by Soiltest. They weigh only about 10 kg and just 60 sec after seating on the test surface, they w i l l register measurements for both density and moisture. Readings are displayed on a single direct-reading dial in a density range of 7 0 - 1 7 0 Ibs/ft 3 and a moisture range of 0--40 pcf. Metric versions register density of 1.100-2.700 g/cm 3 and moisture of 0 - 0 . 6 4 0 g/cm 3. Radiation is well below AEC tolerance levels. The radioactive source is 10 millicuries Cesium 137/55 millicuries Americium 241 Beryllium. It is shielded by a barrier of lead and sintered tungsten. "GEOFIX" TIONING

SATELLITE SYSTEM

POSI-

Geophysical Service Inc. announces the availability of a new brochure that gives technical data on the " G E O F I X " satellite positioning system. It provides highly accurate survey control in remote areas and can also be used, for example, for rig location, pipeline routing, mapping and aerialphotography control, and base-station positioning for radio-location systems. It achieves geographical and elevation accuracies of 10 m after only 8 to 15 good quality satellite passes.

The system (consisting of a satellite receiver, paper tape punch, satellite antenna and pre-amp unit, tripod, and power supply) is easily transportable by helicopter, small truck or other vehicle. Field tapes are processed on a minicomputer. The brochure is available free from: Geophysical Service Inc., P.O. Box 5621, MS 938, Dallas, Texas 75222, U.S.A.

NEW TUNNEL-CUTTING MACHINE The latest Atlas-Copco tunnel-cutting machine, the Fullfacer 400 has been introduced and is at present being used to bore a 7-kin long, 4.25-m wide tunnel near Athens, Greece, to form part of a new water-supply system. The FF400 weighs 120 tons and has four radially projecting rotary cutters with a total of 46 Sandvik Coromant TAB 100 wolfram-carbide bits, these work on AtlasCopco's "undercutting" technique which can result in a 70% saving in energy. The new machine has a total installed power of 430 kW. For further details contact: Atlas-Copco AB, Stockholm, Sweden (or regional offices of the company).

SENSITIVE

TILTMETER

Earth Science Research, Inc. announces a biaxial borehole-tiltmeter system designed for ease in measurement of extremely small rock, soil and tectonic deformation in 6-inch boreholes. The instrument is capable of re-
