187A regime. Detailed study of regional structure and tectonics can help delineate flat dipping dislocations and clayey seams. Stratigraphic and lithological study also shows karst and rock mass homogeneity.

884266 Controlling safety in geotcchnical design Oliphant. J; Blockley. D I; Larnach, W J Inst Civ Engrs Proc Pt2 1/85, March 1988, P67-88 The uncertainty in parameter and system modelling, and the role of critical state soil mechanics are first discussed, and the concept of the failure boundary surface introduced. Requirements of practical calculation techniques are defined, and current methods assessed. The suitability of the use of partial safety factors is demonstrated. A propped embedded retaining wall is used as an example to illustrate the theory. Limit state design criticisms are presented, together with the possible roles of codes of practice.
Geological factors of importance in surface structures
884270 Stability problems of slopes and watertightness of small reservoirs (In French) Couturier, B Proc 5tk International Congress InternationalAssociation of Engineering Geology, Buenos Aires, 20-25 October 1986 V2, PI241-1244. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1986 Problems for a small hill dam in France. which arose because of uncommon and unforeseen geology, are presented. Slope stability was affected by excavations at the toe of existing unstable slopes. Water loss was caused by leakage through desiccation cracks in surface marls into the carbonate rocks below. Remedial measures, including the installation of a waterproof blanket in the reservoir are described.

884267 Engineering geological aspects of the Kestel Dam in West Turkey Turk, N Proc 5th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Buenos Aires, 20-25 October 1986 V2. P1217-1224. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema, 1986 A 65m high rockfill dam, founded on weathered andcsites, is to be constructed. Fill material will be provided from the foundation excavations. Site investigation examined jointing. weathering, rock mass quality and permeability. A rock mass classification scheme, suitable for practical engineering use. is described. Recommendations based on field observations and laboratory testing included: full scale foundation grouting; reinforcement of slopes on both sides of the dam; and restriction of use of andesite for rip-rap unless protected, as it will degrade rapidly on wet-dry cycling.
884268 Geological conditions influencing the selection of dam site Yu Ke-Li Proc 5th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology. Buenos Aires, 20-25 October 1986 V2. PI225-1230. Publ Rotterdam. A A Balkema, 1986 Dam site selection is discussed with particular reference to a number of case histories in China, and practices to reduce geological risks are described. The necessity of accurate geological mapping is first emphasised. The stability of rock masses, including old and new slides and cut slopes, karst, groundwater problems, and the importance of establishing a rock properties data base are examined.
884269 Some indicative geologic and geomorphologic conditions for damsite selection Zhu Jian Ye Proc 5th International Congress International Association of Engineering Geology, Buenos Aires, 20-25 October 1986 1"2. P1231-1237. Publ Rotterdam: A A Balkema. 1986 Geological and geomorphological approaches to dam site selection are presented, based on wide experience in China. Detailed study of geomorphic features can provide useful information on geologic factors such as overburden thickness, deep buried river cuts, karst, weathering, and groundwater
884271 Pile design and construction practice. Third edition Tomlinson. M J London: Palladian, 1987. 378P A textbook up to date on current practices and revised to take account of recent research and development. Chapters are: general principles and practices; types of pile; piling equipment and methods; calculating the resistance of piles to compressive loads; pile groups under compressive loading; design of piled foundations to resist uplift and lateral loading;structural design of piles and pile groups; piling for marine structures; miscellaneous piling problems; durability of piled foundations; and site investigation, piling contracts, pile testing.
884272 Allowable loads for concreted vibro-columns and cemented vibro-stone-columns assessed by a statistical method (In German) Hettler, A; Berg, J Geoteehnik VIO. N4. 1987, PI69-179 Thirty loading tests were carried out on concrete piles and cemented stone columns. Results are statistically analysed. Examples of the use of Bayes' theorem to derive pile safety factors are presented. Both single pile and group behaviour are analysed.
884273 Dynamic analysis of piled foundations using the CAPWAPC method Davis. R A; Mute, J N; Kightley, M L Ground Engng V20. N8. Nov 1987. P16-22 The Case Pile Wave Analysis Program-Continuous Version (CAPWAPC) which determines the static load capacity of piles by analysing their response to driving is described. Velocity and force measurements are used to develop a one dimensional wave equation, which is then interpreted physically. CAPWAPC replaces the equation with a series of equations defining the behaviour of soil and pile resistances. The program models the pile as continuous segments, each of which may have soil resistances, separated into static and dynamic components. The technique enables testing of a large number of piles relatively easily and gives more information than available from conventional static load tests.
