Announcement
GEOSYNTHETICS RESEARCH INSTITUTE OPENS AT DREXEL UNIVERSITY A major step in geosynthetics was realized at the end of November 1986 with the creation of the Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI) at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, under the direction of Professor Robert M. Koerner. The primary focus is to carry out generictype research on a wide variety of materials and situations. The Institute is intended to be very flexible with options of other than Drexel people doing research and a general sharing of information gained. Work can be done at Drexel or off-campus as the situation requires.
Scope The GRI is to conduct research and development for the geosynthetic industry and community which involves geotextiles, geogrids, geonets, geomembranes and geocomposites. Within the overall scope of the Institute are the following: Product development. Product testing and evaluation. Laboratory testing and training. Development and evaluation of design methods. Computer and centrifuge modeling of prototype systems. Field monitoring of installed systems. Geosynthetic information storage and retrieval. Specification gathering and assessment. Educational seminars, workshops and courses (on-campus or off-campus). 291 Geotextiles and Geornembranes (4) (1986)---O Elsevier Applied Science Publishers Ltd, England, 1986. Graduate thesis development (full and part time). Development of undergraduate and graduate cooperative education opportunities.
Staffing GRI is staffed by both full- and part-time employees. Most are associated via Drexel University but all types of variations are possible. Currently GRI consists of a director, assistant director, laboratory manager, secretary and 5 to 10 graduate students. There are five faculty members available on an as-received part-time basis. Interaction with other Universities, Companies and Institutions is encouraged.
Current Projects The following is a selection of on-going projects: Prediction and evaluation of soil clogging of geotextiles. Evaluation of high alkalinity liquids on geotextiles. Effect of hydrocarbons and organic solvents on all type of geosynthetics. Centrifuge modeling of geotextile and geogrids walls and embankments. Development of test methods and standards. Generation of a computer data base of various specifications. Generation of a computer data base of geosynthetic products and their properties. Specific, mission-oriented projects for federal and state organizations. Specific, mission-oriented projects for industrial manufacturers. Conducting of various seminars, workshops and courses.
Funding The funding for GRI comes from four specific sources: An industry-wide consortium of geosynthetic product manufacturers who share in the findings of the Institute and its educatiofial, informational and testing facilities. Government (federal and state) research grants and contracts. Private industry (owners, consultants and manufacturers) grants. Miscellaneous donations and grants-in-aid. For further information please contact Dr R. M. Koerner or Ms M. Macklin at The Geosynthetic Research Institute, Drexel University, Building # 10, 33rd Street and Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19104, USA. Tel. (215) 895 2343.
