Gibraltar moves into China with atomiser deal GIBRALTAR Industries, based in Buffalo, NewYork, has purchased Curie Suzhou, a privately held manufacturer of atomised copper and copper alloy powder in Suzhou, China. SCM Metal Products, of Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, a Gibraltar affiliate acquired last year from Höganäs North America for around $43 million, will operate the plant as SCM Asia. Located in the Wang Zhou Industrial Park about 60 miles west of Shanghai, the plant opened a year ago. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The operation has 60 employees and annualised sales of about $8 million. The current management team is to remain with the new company. The year-old Suzhou facility is expected to support sales of approximately $20 million by 2007. Its products are primarily sold to the powder metallurgy and thermal management industries. "This strategically located facility gives us an on-the-
ground presence in the centre of the rapidly growing Chinese industrial market, which strengthens our ability to grow our business in this increasingly important part of the world. It is an excellent complement to our existing SCM operations, solidifying our leadership position in the powdered metal products market," said Carl Spezio, Group President, Gibraltar Thermal Processing. "Many of our existing customers in all three of our business segments are expanding their operations in China, and this facility better positions us to serve them. We also intend to actively grow our business with new customers, and we plan to broaden the product and service offering," said Mr Spezio. Monthly production capacity of copper, bronze, and brass powders ranges from 200 to 300 metric tons. Major markets include powder metallurgy and thermal management. SCM plans on concentrating sales initially in Asia.
