SSP P u m p s shift shear-sensitive m e d i a Trouble-free t r a n s f e r of a variety of s h e a r sensitive a n d viscous m e d i a at the new Broadstairs, UK, p r o d u c t i o n a n d warehousing o p e r a t i o n of Sericol Limited, is achieved with SSP positive rotary lobe p u m p s from Alfa Laval P u m p s Ltd. The range of p u m p e d m e d i a used in p r o d u c tion of Sericol's l e a d i n g b r a n d s of screen p r i n t i n g inks i n c l u d e s UV resins (some of which have

very high viscosities), varnishes, p i g m e n t s a n d o t h e r additives. Sericol's new production p l a n t a n d w a r e h o u s e facility involves i n t e g r a t i n g p r o d u c t i o n o p e r a t i o n s from o t h e r locations a n d the site forms the m a i n d i s t r i b u t i o n centre for serving UK a n d i n t e r n a t i o n a l markets. Choice of the SSP rotary lobe p u m p s which were installed in July 1996 was b a s e d on long

t e r m satisfactory o p e r a t i o n in previous Sericol p r o d u c t i o n plants. SSP DRI Range p u m p s with 4in. a n d 6in. dia. port size a n d d u c t i l e i r o n c o n s t r u c t i o n are a p p l i e d by Sericol for d u t i e s t h a t do n o t d e m a n d stainless steel build; such as the t r a n s f e r of UV resins from holding t a n k s a n d t h r o u g h o u t the s u b s e q u e n t m i x i n g stages of the process. SSP SR Range p u m p s , with 3 in d i a m e t e r port size a n d stainless steel for all p r o d u c t c o n t a c t c o m p o n e n t s , are employed for the t r a n s f e r of m e d i a such as w a t e r based inks. For all of the d u t i e s involved, the ability to provide smooth, efficient t r a n s fer w i t h o u t d a m a g e to s h e a r sensitive m e d i a covering a wide s p a n of viscosities, was a critical factor. p u m p to t h e Springer Factory of K-Shoemakers in Cumbria. The new p u m p successfully operates 24 h o u r s a day, 7 days a weel~ m a i n t a i n i n g t h e c o m p a n y ' s demanding output. The external, positive displacement, m a g n e t i c drive u n i t has b e e n installed a t K-Shoemakers, a s u b s i d i a r y of Clarks I n t e r n a tional, to re-circulate isocyanate t h r o u g h a ring m a i n o n t h e a u t o m a t i c sole m a k i n g process. The isocyanate is m i x e d with resin a n d p u m p e d t h r o u g h a polyurethane moulding machine to form the shoe sole. The c o m p a n y h a d p r e v i o u s l y used p u m p s s u p p l i e d with a m e c h a n i c a l seal, b u t due to the highly abrasive n a t u r e of isocyanate w h e n e x p o s e d to air or water, t h e seals on the p u m p s were very quickly destroyed. Gilkes advised t h a t the possible a l t e r n a t i v e s of u s i n g a

c o n v e n t i o n a l p u m p with mechanical seal a n d back u p lip seal, or a double m e c h a n i c a l seal a n d b a r r i e r fluid, would n o t g u a r a n t e e t h a t the p u m p e d liquid would be c o n t a i n e d a n d so r e c o m m e n d e d t h e V30 (R1ATCDLH) Type 1 m a g n e t i c drive unit, with no seals. Tony George, Chief E n g i n e e r at K-Shoemakers explained; "We h a d n ' t realised how acute our isocyanate p r o b l e m s would be; b u t p u m p s lasting j u s t one m o n t h was completely unacceptable. Gilkes t r i a l e d the new m a g d r i v e p u m p for t h r e e m o n t h s to be sure of its success, a n d it's now 15 m o n t h s since we first installed it a n d it's still going strong.
