APPLICATIONS Glass fibre reinforced nylon 66 containing proprietary phosphorus fire retardants are being used in Europe as an alternative to thermosets in the manufacture of air-break contactors, magnetic switches, circuit breakers, housings for power breakers, and other electrical applications. The fire retardancy required of materials for high-voltage applications is V-O (per UL94). The material must also withstand high temperatures, remain environmentally stable, withstand electrolytic corrosion, as well as providing high strength and rigidity. The growing trend toward miniaturization of electrical assemblies, notably switch gear, is a major force behind the materials change from thermosets to engineering thermoplastics in that field. The latter permit reduction of wall thicknesses and incorporation of multiple components into one compact moulded part.

GLASS REINFORCED NYLON 66 ACCELERATOR PEDAL
Ford Motor Co. has redesigned the accelerator pedal for its new It is now made in a 40% glass reinforced nylon 6, which Fiesta. has the high impact strength and mechanical characteristics reThe material used is Sniamid quired by the Ford specification. ASN 27/400 from Snia Technopolimeri, in Italy.
GLASS REINFORCED NYLON 66 RADIATORHEADER TANK
Vehicle radiator header tank and heater unit components are being injection moulded in BIP Chemicals' Beetle nylon 66 AF326, a 30% glass fibre reinforced grade with special hydrolysis-resisting properties. Developed primarily for automotive use in mouldings which are in contact with water and antifreeze solution, Beetle AF326 is not vulnerable to ethylene glycol or aromatics, nor is it affected by high operating temperatures which are likely to induce stress cracking in standard grades of nylon.
The rocker box cover on a diesel engine for the Citroen AX is moulded in France in Solvay's Ixef, glass fibre reinforced, semiaromatic polyarylamide. The material moulds well and gives a warp-free sealing surface. The high temperature and moisture stability of Ixef means it can withstand the harsh under-the-bonnet conditions. Citroen uses Ixef 1022, a 50% glass reinforced material.
