This is the twelfth Gmelin volume on organotin compounds, and covers only tripropyltin- and tributyltinoxygen compounds, but it is a key volume as the tri-nbutyltin derivatives are the most familiar in both the laboratory and industry. The unstabte hydroxides are included but surprisingly not the much more familiar bistrialkyltin oxides ; perhaps they are to appear in a future volume. The alkoxides, ketonates and acylates follow, then the derivatives of the carbonic and carbamic acids, the peroxides, and the derivatives of the oxyacids of the halogens, nitrogen, phosphorus etc., and there is a separate section on free radicals containing R&O groups.

For example, 18 pp. are devoted to tributyltin methoxide. Its preparations and physical properties are critically presented, and then its reactions with 168 reagents are tabulated, with footnotes on particular reactions. This section contains 125 references. The many applications of the compounds in industry and agriculture are included, and there is a formula index. The presentation, now wholly in English, is of the familiar very high standard of these volumes, and the errors are very few. The literature is covered up to the end of 1982. Again, all chemists handling organotin compounds are indebted to Herbert and Ingeborg Schumann for presenting this important section of organotin chemistry in such a convenient and lucid format.
