Good Books in Cardiovascular Disease Appearing in 2006 Major Textbooks
Preventive Cardiology
1. Topol EJ, editor, Calif RM, Prystowsky EN, Thomas JD, Thompson PD, associate editors. Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine. Third Edition. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 2007:1,628, $229.00. A book of 110 chapters by 197 contributors. It is certainly an authoritative reference textbook in cardiovascular medicine. It is accompanied by a DVD with ⬎1,000 digital images and multimedia video clips that bring the text alive. Each page is fully packed. Excellent illustrations. Highly recommended. A beautiful book. 2. Creager MA, Dzau VJ, Loscalzo J. Vascular Medicine. A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease. Philadelphia: Saunders Elsevier 2006:1,000, $149.00. This comprehensive book of 66 chapters by 110 contributors concerns non-coronary vascular disease. It is probably the bible on this topic. It involves many varieties of specialists including internists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, and interventional cardiologists. 3. Griffin BP, Rimmerman CM, Topol EJ, editors. The Cleveland Clinic Cardiology Board Review. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 2007:809, $129.00. A book of 60 chapters by 87 contributors. The phrase “board review” attracts buyers to books and enrollees to meetings. I prefer Topol’s Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine.
6. Gotto AM Jr, Toth PP, editors. Comprehensive Management of High Risk Cardiovascular Patients. New York: Informa Healthcare 2007:770, $199.95. An authoritative and lucid book of 21 chapters by 44 contributors. Superb. 7. Foody JM, editor. Preventive Cardiology. Insight into the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease. Totawa, New Jersey: Humana Press 2006:346, $99.50. This book of 17 chapters by 27 contributors is well done and useful for both general internists and cardiologists. 8. Lauer RM, Burns TL, Daniels SR, editors. Pediatric Prevention of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease. Oxford: Oxford University Press 2006:378, $69.95. A good book of 18 chapters by 34 contributors. 9. Ridker PM, Rifai N, editors. C-Reactive Protein and Cardiovascular Disease. Montreal, Canada: Medi Edition 2006:393, $68.99. This book of 24 chapters by 37 contributors is a comprehensive focus on the biology, clinical importance, and laboratory evaluation of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. This topic is obviously a hot one, and this book puts together in one place a huge amount of information on this important protein.
General Cardiology but Not in Depth 4. Nixon JV (Ian), editor. Aurigemma GP, Bolger AF, Chaitman BR, Crawford MH, Fletcher GF, Francis GS, Gersony WM, Harrington RA, Ott P, Wenger NK, Alpert JS (co-editor). The AHA Clinical Cardiac Consult. Second Edition. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 2007: 400, $69.95. This book of 354 topics by 135 contributors is owned by the Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association. Each topic is no more than 2 pages in length and divided into 5 major subheadings: basic, diagnosis, treatment, medication (drugs), and follow-up. The topics are listed alphabetically as in an encyclopedia. I guess the book is useful. Much space is blank on many pages. *5. Crawford MH, Srivathson K, McGlothlin DP, editors. Current Consult Cardiology. New York: Lange Medical Books/McGraw-Hill 2006:350, $64.95. This book is similar to the Nixon one. A total of 356 topics are covered, each in alphabetical order, and each no more than 2 pages and 6 columns in length. Each topic is divided into “differential diagnosis” and “key diagnostic and treatment points for all major disorders in cardiology.” The 6-column format leads to much wasted space in the lower portions of most pages. The bit-sized bits of information may be good in the computer age, but it is not my preference. 0002-9149/07/$ – see front matter © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Since the first edition in 1994, many changes and innovations have occurred in the diagnosis and management of patients with heart failure. This book is comprehensive and very well done. Hemostasis and Thrombosis 11. Colman RW, Marder VJ, Clowes AW, George JN, Goldhaber SZ, editors. Hemostatis and Thrombosis. Basic Principles and Clinical Practice. Fifth Edition. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (A Wolters Kluwer Company) 2006:1,827, $299.00. A comprehensive book of 123 chapters by 190 contributors is the classic in this important field. Each page is fully packed and each chapter is fully referenced. This book covers the entire broad field of thrombotic and bleeding disorders. Cardiovascular Disease in Women 12. Winn HN, Dellsperger KC, editors. Cardiovascular Disease in Women. Abingdon, Oxon: Informa Healthcare 2006:178, $159.66. www.AJConline.org

The American Journal of Cardiology (www.AJConline.org)
This book of 12 chapters by 26 contributors is one of several on this topic and is useful but not exceptional. Cardiomyopathy *13. Maron BJ, Salberg L. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Practical Notes on Interpretation and Treatment. Seventh Edition. New York: Oxford University Press 2006:384, $57.50. This single-authored book of 27 chapters provides a non-comprehensive but practical guide to diagnosis and management of the more frequent cardiac arrhythmias. *16. Sternick EB, Wellens HJJ. Variants of Ventricular Preexcitation. Recognition and Treatment. Malden, Massachusetts: Blackwell Futura 2006:152, $84.95. was written by him. Mullins’ book is a must for those dealing with patients with congenital heart disease. 20. Kearns-Jonker M, editor. Congenital Heart Disease. Molecular Diagnostics. Totowa, New Jersey: Human Press 2006:278, $99.50. This book of 15 chapters by 31 contributors describes a series of techniques currently used to identify the molecular basis for cardiovascular disease. For those involved in this area, surely this book will be useful. 21. Driscoll DJ. Fundamentals of Pediatric Cardiology. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (a Wolters Kluwer company) 2006:176, $69.95. This single-authored book of 14 chapters is directed to primary care physicians who care for infants and children with congenital heart disease. Driscoll emphasizes that it is not necessary for non-pediatric cardiologists to know about each of the congenital cardiac malformations, but that it is important to be able to determine that the patient has: congenital heart disease; cyanotic or non-cyanotic variety; heart failure or excessive pulmonary blood flow; or requires urgent detailed evaluation and treatment. A useful little book by a very experienced pediatric cardiologist. Electrocardiography
17. Hijazi ZM, Bonhoeffer P, Feldman T, Ruiz CE, editors. Transcatheter Valve Repair. London: Taylor & Francis 2006:382, $95.00. A hot topic and already a book on it! 22. Ferry DR. ECG in 10 Days. Second Edition. New York: McGraw-Hill Medical 2007:320, $39.95. This single-authored book has 10 chapters— one for each of 10 days. There have been literally 100s of books published on electrocardiography and each tends to possess some special feature. If one studied thoroughly each of these chapters for 10 days, the likelihood is that one could be a fairly decent electrocardiographer, a fairly unusual creation in modern-day cardiology. 23. Bayés de Luna A, Fiol-Sala M, Antman EM. The 12-Lead ECG in ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction. A Practical Approach For Clinicians. Malden, Massachusetts: Blackwell Futura 2007:112, $59.95. A little book of 6 chapters focuses exclusively on STelevation acute myocardial infarction. 24. These authors have gathered electrocardiographic data in over 1,800 normal infants, children, and adolescents. They have produced a unique monograph displaying numerous normal standards and percentile charts.
Pediatric Cardiology
Echocardiography
19. Mullins CE, editor. Cardiac Catheterization in Congenital Heart Disease: Pediatric and Adult. Malden, Massachusetts: Blackwell Futura 2006:932, $225.00. This single-authored book of 31 chapters occupying 932 pages is a tour-de-force. It represents the largest singleauthored medical text I have seen since Dr. Arthur Guyton’s 11 editions of Textbook of Physiology, every page of which
25. Oh JK, Seward JB, Tajik AJ. The Echo Manual. Third Edition. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 2006: 431, $159.00. phers. The book is beautifully done. Although a few of the illustrations could be cropped, virtually all are excellent. This book is one of the very best on this topic. *26. Solomon SD, editor, with Bulwer B. Essential Echocardiography. A Practical Handbook with DVD. Totowa, New Jersey: Humana Press 2007:458, $150.00. This book of 23 chapters by 23 contributors provides a practical and scholarly overview of echocardiography today. The illustrations are extensive and well selected. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (A Wolters Kluwer Company) 2006:807, $135.00. This comprehensive book of 34 chapters by 34 contributors has changed with time and remains the first and classic in this field. The accompanying DVD-CDROM contains ⬎150 cases covering a broad range of classic findings. The case examples can be transferred into one’s own computer for educational purposes. 35. Uflacker R, editor. Atlas of Vascular Anatomy. An Angiographic Approach. Second Edition. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 2007:905, $229.00. This book covers the entire vascular system, and therefore, would be more useful to the non-cardiac interventionalist than the cardiac one. Although there are 5 contributors in addition to the editor, their names are not listed on the title page of each of the 24 chapters. That should be corrected in future editions. Most illustrations, and particularly, the drawings by Josè Falcetti are superb. Percutaneous Intervention
Exercise Testing 29. Froelicher VF, Myers J. Exercise and the Heart. Fifth Edition. Philadelphia: Saunders Elsevier 2006:524, $89.00. This double-authored splendid book has become a classic. This book of 38 chapters by 80 contributors is almost certainly the best on this topic. It includes both the heart and the peripheral vascular system. Again, abbreviations in titles of books are to be avoided. *32. Dilsizian V, Pohost GM, editors. Cardiac CT, PET and MR. Malden, Massachusetts: Blackwell Futura 2006: 262, $125.00. This book of 11 chapters by 22 contributors focuses on positron emission tomography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance, and cardiac computed tomography, techniques that provide non-invasive coronary angiograms, delineation of the arterial wall, and corresponding functional data on myocardial perfusion, metabolism, and viability. Same criticism as in #30 and #31. *33. Germano G, Berman DS, editors. Clinical Gated Cardiac SPECT. Second Edition. New York: Blackwell Futura 2006:367, $150.00. This book of 14 chapters by 17 contributors is well done. For those in this field, it will be very useful.
*36. King SB III, Yeung AC, editors. Interventional Cardiology. New York: McGraw-Hill Medical 2007:600, $135.00. This book of 71 chapters by 117 contributors is beautifully prepared and intended, of course, for the interventional cardiologist. For this subspecialty group, this book appears to be a “must have.” 37. Seung-Jung P, Mintz GS, editors. Handbook of Left Main Stem Disease. Abingdon, Oxon: Informa Healthcare 2006:178, $150.26. This good book of 7 chapters by 17 contributors may be the first on this topic. 38. Kern MJ, editor. Berger PB, Block PC, Klein LW, Luskey WK, Uretsky BF, associate editors. Philadelphia: Wolters Kluwer 2007:368, $89.95. These questions and answers were contributed by 62 contributors and concern 40 topics (chapters). If I were soon to take the cardiology boards, I would purchase this book and study it. *40. Bridges CR, Horvath KA, Chiu R C-J, editors. Myocardial Laser Revascularization. Malden, Massachusetts: Blackwell Futura 2006:174: $95.00. This book of 13 chapters by 19 contributors will surely be useful to those involved in this very specialized area. 41. Lanzer P, editor. *42. Saw J, Exaire JE, Lee DS, Yadav JS, editors. Handbook of Complex Percutaneous Carotid Intervention. Totowa, New Jersey: Humana Press 2007:334, $185.00. This book of 24 chapters by 17 contributors focuses, of course, on the percutaneous intravascular approach to carotid arterial narrowing. Whether this intravascular approach (angioplasty ⫾ stenting) will win out over the extravascular approach (endarterectomy) remains to be seen. At any rate, the intravascular approach is gaining in popularity. Cardiac Physical Examination 43. Ranganathan N, Sivaciyan V, Saksena FB. The Art and Science of Cardiac Physical Examination with Heart Sounds and Pulse Wave Forms on CD. Totowa, New Jersey: Humana Press 2006:411, $99.50. A book of 11 chapters by the 3 authors. Obviously, this area of cardiology is presently being neglected. Most of this information, however, is also present in the major cardiac textbooks (Braunwald, Hurst, Topol, Willerson). Cardiac Physiology 44. Katz AM. Physiology of the Heart. Fourth Edition. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (A Wolters Kluwer Company) 2006:644, $99.00. This single-authored comprehensive book of 16 chapters has become a classic. It focuses on both the normal and abnormal heart on many levels— cellular, subcellular, molecular, genetic—and how they effect cardiac function.
This book of 34 chapters by 52 contributors is superb and fills a major void among books on cardiovascular disease. Highly recommended. *47. Clark LT, editor; McFarlane SI, associate editor. Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes. New York: McGraw Hill Medical 2007:635, $75.00. This book of 22 chapters by 40 contributors, all but one of whom have professional addresses in New York City, puts in one publication a great deal of information on cardiovascular problems in patients with diabetes mellitus. 48. McAllister HA, Jr, Willerson JT, editors. Ten Years of Images from CIRCULATION, Journal of the American Heart Association. Dallas: American Heart Association 2007:231, $59.95. This book includes 148 separate case images. I enjoy single case studies and splendid images, so I applaud the editors and the American Heart Association for publishing this monograph. Non-Human Cardiology 49. Xu Q, editor. A Handbook of Mouse Models of Cardiovascular Disease. West Sussex, UK: John Wiley & Sons 2006:387, $200.00. This “handbook” of 29 chapters occupying 387 pages by 68 contributors puts together in one place a large amount of information on experimentally-produced heart disease in mice. For those working in this area, this book will be useful.
Cardiac Pharmacology 45. Mancia G, editor. Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists. Current Perspectives. Second Edition. Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon: Informa Healthcare 2006:218, $206.61. This book of 11 chapters by 23 contributors describes the use of angiotensin II antagonists in several conditions— myocardial infarction, systemic hypertension, renal failure, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, metabolic syndrome and preventing stroke. It also compares the various AT1 inhibitors. Its price is inappropriate! Miscellaneous *46. Morrow DA, editor. Cardiovascular Biomarkers. Pathophysiology and Disease Management. Totowa, New Jersey: Humana Press 2006:620, $175.00.
Comments Of the 49 books commented on in this piece, 16 (33%) have a 2007 publishing date and the others a 2006 publishing date. Only 14 (29%) were published on acid-free (permanent) paper. (They are indicated by an asterisk.) The prices of the books keep rising. These 49 ranged from $26.95 to $299.00 (mean $125.03).
