East, purifies water from three springs by removing coliform bacteria and Cryptosporidium, producing a consistent supply of safe, clear drinking water. USFilter says that within days of the plant going online, the local population was commenting on the clarity of the water and reduced chlorine taste. The facility, rated at 1000 cubic metres per hour (6.34 million gallons per day), includes seven CMF units, each of which contains 90 membrane modules. Previously, the city of Salt treated the water with chlorine only, and further treatment was required to bring the system up to the standards mandated by the Water Authority of Jordan. The water-treatment system was funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and designed by USAID’s consulting engineer CDM International Inc. The general contractor was Morganti Group ofAmman, Jordan.

Dialysis filters test positive for poison gas Reports in the US press reveal that kidney dialysis filters lied to the deaths of 23 people in Croatia during 2001 contained traces of a potentially poisonous gas. Filters manufactured by US company Baxter have been linked to about 50 deaths worldwide. During November 2001, Baxter announced it had identified a possible cause. A perfhtorohydrocarbon fluid called PF5070 was used to test for leaks in dialyzers in a Baxter manufacturing plant in Sweden. Traces of the fluid had remained in some filters, and could have caused fatal air bubbles to form in the patient’s hearts, says Baxter. Croatia’s national toxicological institute identified a toxic gas called perfluoroisobutylene in tests performed on dialyzers one week after the death of the last of the 23 Croatian patients. Perfluoroisobutylene can be created by heating PF5070 to extremely high temperatures, says Baxter. It is stated in the safety sheet of the fluid that when exposed to temperatures of about 2OO”C, perfluoroisobutylene could be a byproduct, but Baxter maintains that there is no possible way that this could happen in a dialyzer.
Mechanical Technology outlines micro fuel ceil plans Mechanical Technology Inc has announced that it intent&s to enter the mass market in 2004 with a micro fuel-cell power source for cell phone convergence devices, and to develop two new generations of promtyPes during 2002.
