The Eu r o p ean Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) Technical Committee 1 has contmued its d e v e l o p m e n t work on 8 bit single byte c o d e d graphic character sets. The first edition of Standard ECMA-94 was issued m March 1985, its contents having b e c o m e international standard ISO 8859/1. The second edition of ECMA-94 comprises the four Latin alphabets Nos 1-4. Latin alphabet No 2 is also the subject of an international standard, ISO 8859/2. Latin alphabets Nos 3 and 4 are p r o c e s s e d m ISO as draft pr oposals for an international standard DP 8859/3 and DP 8859/4, r e s pectively. Each of these alphabets specifies an 8 bit single byte c o d e d graphic character set which covers the requirements and n e e d s for geographical areas comprising different languages. For instance, Latin alphabet No 1
Since 1 N o v e m b e r 1986, Rank Electronic Tubes, Sidcup, UK, has b e e n trading u n d e r the name Rank Brimar Limited. This is e x p e c t e d to allow closer coordination with The Rank Organisation's recently acquired professional cathode ray tube business of the same name, which is based at Middleton, Greater Manchester, UK. Film recorder has direct s c r e e n compatibility A 60 Hz non-interlaced raster-scan film r e c o r d e r which offers direct s c r e e n compatibility with state-ofthe-art graphics workstations has b e e n r e l e a s e d b y Dunn Instruments.
The Compact Color Model 635 brings raster-scan cine capability to the 64 kHz environment. The 635 features 'rasterblend' for smooth lmes and curves as well as the patented AutoComp which automatically adjusts for luminance changes to en s u r e consistent images. This is especially important in cine applications w h e r e clays of shooting are run m a matter of minutes and changes in luminance levels can b e devastating. The camera offers p r o g r a m m 46
covers essentially the needs of Western E u r o p e and Latin alphabet No 2 those of Eastern Europe for Latin-based scripts. In addition to these Latin alphabets, ECMA has issued two further standards: ECMA-113:8 bit single byte c o d e d graphic character sets - - Latin/Cyrillic alphabet; and ECMA-114:8 bit single byte c o d e d graphic character sets - - Latin/ Arabic alphabet. These two standards bel ong to the same family of c o d e d graphic character sets as the four Latin alphabets specified in ECMA-94. They have b e e n contributed to ISO w h e r e they are p r o c e s s e d u n d e r the fast-track procedure. ECMA, 114 Rue d e Rh6ne, CH-1204 Geneva, Switzerland. r l
Avionics CRT A high-resolution c~lour CRT for airborne and military applications has b e e n d e v e l o p e d b y AEG. Designated the M18-E851, it is d e s i g n e d for sunlight-readable cockpit displays and offers resolutions down to 0.4 mm. The r u g g e d i z e d assembly con-
ability, gamma correction, a high p e r f o r m a n c e CRT, and on-line diagnostics. Mem ory can store data values for up to 24 different film profiles. Control is via a front panel k e y b o a r d using commands in simple English for ease of use. The CompactColor is e x p e c t e d to have the greatest impact in the CAD/CAM/CAE market w h e r e flicker-free terminals proliferate. Presentation graphics, oil and gas (oil field production and research), remote sensing, anunation, as well as a e r o s p a c e and def e n ce are other potential markets.
