Advanced graphics processing with a 1066 visible line by 1440 dot non-interlaced display is offered on the Topaz system from Primagraphics. 256 simultaneous screen colours may be selected from a l~Jette of 16 mflJ.on. The system is intended for use in animation,
fitted with new high resolution display consoles under a £2.5 ~ n contract awarded to Plessey Displays and CAP Scientific. The terminais provide an integrated naval command and control system based on the Nautic intelligent display console. The console contains a microprocessor, the software developed b y CAP S~_.entifio, and data highways. The hardware and foundation software is by Plessey and includes the company's Series 9 display. This is supplied either as a standard 400ram diameter CRT with a 300 nun labelled pan display

and static or interactive tote areas, or a 500 nun high resolution monochrome raster unit is awil-hle. An
additional option is available for a plasma sc~en. The Nautic system ranges in complexity from a snnple weapons contrel system of one console to multi-operator axrangemenm for larger ships. Built in redundancy allows for one console to lose operational capabilty. The design is compact by comparison with previous d,~igns. Plessey claims that its lower power requirement eliminates the need for water cooling. The form of presentation to the operator is a departure from convention. Both tote and contact inforr a t i o n required by the operator are provided on a single screen by par-

titioning the display into areas. This task-oriented partitioning is made possible by the high resolution of the Nautic system. More orders for the system are already in the offing with potential in other less sophisticated applications, and total orders could come to £40 million with exports.

Topaz consists of a range of circuit boards communicating over a high-speed 32-bit parallel bus, and a 480 mm ultra-high resolution monitor. A typical system would include a display controller with up to four independent bit planes which holds screen in~A._ges in its dynamic RAM, a powerful purposebuilt graphics processor, a bit mover to transfer data between memories and to handle screen, window or bit plane scrolling, zooming and image manipulation, and a colour look-up card to define the tones and sbA_desto be used. Twelve-line ac plasma panel Twelve rows of 40 alphanumeric characters may be displayed on an ac plasma panel from ThomsonCSF. The panel is an addition to the company's existing range of such devices. The 33 mm thick unit is claimed to have a mean time before failure of 50 000 h. Overall dimensions are 260 x 155ram and the operating temperature range is - 1 0 to 60°C. An optional interface board allows the panel to be connected to a standard data processing line.
