By using computer graphics in preparing data for wire wrapping or termination equipment, the system automates the data entry, revision and documentation control process. The crt display of circuit board pin locations, allows the operator to display the sockets, headers or universal strips. Then with the pen, the operator makes the required wire connections.

The plasma display terminal has at least 465 cm 2 of viewing area on a screen 1.25cm thick. The rest of the equipment can be set, up to three metres away.

Capacitance meter A 3½ digit digital capacitance meter for production and quality control, is claimed to have an accuracy of 1% of the reading. A dual threshold measuring technique eliminates the problems of dielectric absorption and the circuitry displays readings within 0.3
seconds on most ranges. Nine overlapping ranges allow measurements to be made from lpF to 0.1999F. The model is a benchtop, mains powered instrument measuring 254 x 76 x 178 mm and weighing 1.4 Kg. Its applications are expected to be in sorting and grading of capacitors, determination of capacitor tolerances, measuring cable capacitances or determining cable lengths using capacitance techniques. A rear panel interface connector provides digital outputs for remote display, sorting and control accessories.

A red diffused lens and luminous intensity of 1.0 millicandelas at five milliamps are characteristics of a
gallium phosphide led. -4O°C to 85°C is the operating temperature and 40 milliamps the continuous forward current, with a maximum forward voltage of 2.6 volts. The reverse voltage is five volts, with a power dissipation above 25°C of 150 milliwatts. The lens diameter is 2.3 mm and the viewing angle, 30 °.

Graphics software Autoprod is an interactive program for producing three dimensional objects on a vdu. Developed by Autoprod Computer Graphics, the software allows an object under design to bedefined only once, and then generates a many different views as are needed, in minutes as opposed to manual drawing taking days. The features of Autoprod include the

automatic removal of hidden lines, the option of generating inter-penetration lines and up to three sectioning planes can be applied to the design. Another software package, Cablos, is an interactive draghting system for creating circuit diagrams and the layout of printed boards. Designed for use by engineers with no knowledge of computers, the package is said to provide virtually unlimited capacity for storing drawings and symbols. Sketches may be found and changed from menus of component symbols and line styles. Cablos was developed by Cambridge Interactive Systems Limited and is adaptable to among other things, cabling layouts, piping, instrumentation diagrams and room layouts.

Intelligent display system For areas of medicine, science and process control, a microprocessor directed, dot matrix, gas discharge display, has been introduced. The system can produce 40, 0.6cm high characters in a 5 x 7 matrix, with each character of 100 ft. Lamberts, minimum brightness and a viewing angle of 130 ° . The screened image technique with the microprocessor, apparently makes the display easily adaptable with the 98 character set having 26 upper and 26 lower case letters, ten numerals and 36 symbols. Refresh rate is flicker free 95 Hz from a single 5V supply. The microcomputer assembles the characters as instructed by the user through an input/output interface. The user interface consists of an eight bit bidirectional data bus, five control

Washout wipeout The first standard production displays to overcome the problem of 'washout' in high ambient light conditions, such as in aircraft, have been introduced. Claimed to g!ve light outputs of 1 000 ft Lamberts, they are intended for multiplexed operation, requiring 35 V p-p for the anode and 3.3 V ac for the filament. With five seven segment characters, flourescent blue green light output peakin at 520 nm and a viewing angle in excess of 120° .
