Editorial Gratitude and a New Generation Sherwin J. Isenberg, MD
I
n January 1997, the new Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus— referred to as the Journal of AAPOS—was born under the talented leadership of Dr Burton Kushner. There were many worries about beginning a new journal. We needed a new publisher, a new name, a new cover, and we needed material. Despite these enormous obstacles, Burt courageously and diplomatically moved forward. He forged our new relationship with Mosby and worked to gather new papers. Although this new journal began modestly as a quarterly, it quickly became a bimonthly publication, which is the format we now enjoy. Burt’s next success was achieving the Journal’s recognition in Index Medicus, which not only lists publication abstracts for searches, but also has become an international standard for the acceptance of a medical journal. It was a difficult struggle using many different strategies, but Burt was able to have the Journal of AAPOS listed within 2 years of commencing publication—an unusually short waiting time. Burt’s stewardship of this journal has been marked with the enthusiasm of beginning a new enterprise. This journal may have many Editors in Chief in the future, but it will always bear the mark of Dr Burton Kushner. The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus owes Burt a debt that it can never repay. Fortunately, Burt is not leaving us entirely. He will remain on the Editorial Committee of AAPOS as a consultant. He will also continue to contribute the segments titled “An Eye on the Arts—The Arts on the Eye,” which illustrate that society has always regarded the eye as more than simply another organ of the human body. Journal of AAPOS
Assuming the editorial leadership of a medical journal is daunting. I greatly appreciate Dr Burton Kushner and Ms Gia Weier, the former Managing Editor, for their assistance during this transition. I am making a few structural changes and will further emphasize certain goals. Dr Ashish Mehta of Anaheim, California, will be joining the Editorial Board as Assistant Editor, while Drs Edward Buckley and Alex Levin, already Board members, will be Associate Editors for strabismus issues and pediatric ophthalmology issues, respectively. Dr Ronald Keech will replace Dr Jeffrey Bloom as Abstract Editor. We thank Dr Bloom for his years of excellent work in finding interesting and educational articles to abstract that have enhanced our knowledge. Our new Managing Editor will be Ms Sharon Goodberry. I believe that this journal has now become the paramount publication in this field in North America. We can now focus on expanding readership throughout the world. In the near future, pediatric ophthalmologists and strabismus specialists worldwide will want to publish their “best” research in the Journal of AAPOS, believing that it is the finest publication to read on all matters relating to the subspecialty. In North America, we know that this is already true. If your hospital or university does not already subscribe to the Journal of AAPOS, please strongly encourage them to do so. We are beholden to our AAPOS members and all subscribers. We welcome any communication from you, including criticism, suggestions, or simple encouragement. The new address is JAAPOS, Harbor-UCLA Research and Education Institute, Building N-1, 1124 West Carson St, Torrance, CA 90502, e-mail:

I truly appreciate the opportunity to continue the traditions of Drs Henry Metz, Marilyn Miller, and Burton Kushner in leading the journal of our association. May we all seek scientific truth together.
