Additivesfor Polymers
Chemicals, Manchester, UK, as a result of ecological concerns growing throughout Europe. The Interiite calcium-zinc additives, now commercially available, are intended for such applications as window and door profiles, pipes, sheet, car trim, cables and injection moulded products. The one-pack system, which is claimed to simplify the addition of stabilizers and lubricants to formulations, shows good thermal stability and comparable physical properties to endproducts manufactured with heavy-metal additives, says the company. When changing from lead to calcium-zinc systems, pipe extrusion lines (screws and dies) do not have to be changed, but the extrusion temperature may have to be adapted. Melt temperature should be in the range of 210-213°C. According to Akcros, durability of PVC products is comparable to those manufactured with lead additives. The Interlite 0000 series of Ca/Zn and Ca/Sn one-packs is designed for pipe applications. It is offered in powder, granule, melt-flake and melt tablet forms. The range also includes a Ca/Zn stabilizer booster system to enhance the heat stability of large pipes. Interlite 3000 Ca/Zn one-packs are used specifically in window profile applications one version includes a process aid for higher output extruders. For general profile use, the Interlite 4000 Ca/Zn one-packs are recommended. Both are available in powder, granule, melt-flake and melt tablet forms. The Interlite 6000 Ca/Zn one-packs have been developed for cable applications and are available as one-packs in either powder or granule form. Interlite 7000 is for foils or rigid sheets and is available as a Ca/Zn stabilizer or as a one pack with Ca/Zn plus lubricant. There are also versions for cellular sheet and profile applications. For injection moulding applications, such as pipe fittings, Akcros offers the Interlite 8000 one-pack systems, which come as a powder. 6
