F O C U S ban on the use of sodium tripolyphosphate in washing products will be required throughout the EU to prevent hyper-nutrification of waterways. The report was requested by the European Commission. The report claims that even if all EU members comply with the EU’s waste waster directive, which is currently not the case, it would not be enough to prevent excessive phosphate levels. The phosphate industry has protested over these findings. Kemivarlden, Oct 2002, (10), 13-14 (in Swedish)

Business roundup: Solvay Interox increasing percarbonate capacity Solvay Interox is to more than double sodium percarbonate capacity in Deer Park, TX, to 50,000 tonnes/y by the end of 2003. The expansion is a result of growing demand for the product as a cleaning and bleaching agent in household products. Chemical and Engineering News, 18 Nov 2002, 80 (46), 20

Kemira interim 2002: chemicals New production capacity will become operational in Oulu during the latter part of 2002. 2001 saw the completion of an expansion to the plant that manufactures sodium percarbonate, which is used as a raw material in detergents. The expanded facility has been in full use, sales volumes have risen and the unit’s profitability has improved compared with 2001. Solvay Interox to add 50 kilotons of PCS Solvay Interox Inc is adding 50,000 tons/y of sodium percarbonate capacity at Deer Park, TX, in response to increased market demand. The new capacity is due on stream by the end of 2003. The new plant will more than double the Solvay’s current North American sodium percarbonate capacity and will be an increase of roughly 25% in its global capacity. One of the main end uses for sodium percarbonate which accounts for the increased market demand is its use as general purpose cleaning and bleaching agent in household cleaning products. Sodium percarbonate is replacing sodium perborate in laundry detergents, the former is more water soluble and cheaper to produce. In addition to Solvay, OCI Chemical Corp also manufactures sodium percarbonate in North America. OCI started up a new 40,000 tons/y 4

Solubilisation Nikkol launches a solubilizer Nikkosolve 108 from Nikkol solubilizes UV sunscreens and low-solubility ingredients such as gamma orizanol, ceramides and Coenzyme Q10. The product, an ester synthesized from 2butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol and 2ethylhexanoic acid, is ideal for use with oils and most cosmetics ingredients such as glycerin, ethylhexyl palmitate, cyclomethicone, macadamia oil and others. Green chemistry Soliance has unveiled Xyliance and Emuliance, two emulsifying bases in line with the trend toward renewable botanical raw materials. Xyliance is made from wheat straw sugars while Emuliance is derived from sugars of wheat bran. Natural fatty alcohols on the sugars are grafted by glycosidic link, with the grafting process involving no solvents or acidic catalysts that endanger the environment. The synthesis is conducted in bioethanol and catalysed by sulfuric acid, followed by neutralization by calcium or sodium. Xyliance and Emuliance are touted as the mildest emulsifying bases in the market. Capable of yielding white and glossy emulsions, the biodegradable products do not contain co-emulsifiers. An alkyl polyglucoside solubiliser Seppic is featuring Oramix CG1 10, which is a solubiliser for foaming and cleansing formulations. The material, which is a nonionic surfactant (alkylether glucose), solubilises essential oils cationic surfactants and fragrances. It contains no 1,4 dioxane, oxidated ethylene, impurities and preservatives. Oramix does not compromise the skin’s natural balance, effectively cleans, has a very soft feel, and creates a fine and stable foam. The material’s solubilising capability has been tested on three fragrance formulations, six synthetic aromatic products and 16 essential oils.
