Ground Water Contamination. Transport and Remediation. Philip B. Bedient, Hanadi S. Rifai, and Charles

J. Newell. Prentice Hall Inc. Englewood Cliffs, NJ; 1994. 541 pp. (ISBN O-13-362592-3) hardcover. This is an introductory text on groundwater. It deals with hydrogeology of the US and relies upon legal requirements in the US to discuss various aspects of decontamination of underground water. Despite its reliance on the US system, the fundamental aspects of groundwater are described generically and thus are applicable to other systems. The 14 chapters of the book cover essentially all aspects of groundwater ranging from the hydrological cycle to biodegradation reaction kinetics. This book is recommended as an introductory textbook for training activities. Practical Handbook for Wetland identification and Delineation. John Grimson Lyon. Lewis Publishers,

Boca Raton, FL; 1994. 157 pp. (ISBN O-87371-590X) hardcover. This brief introductory book addresses various aspects of wetlands by defining wetlands, describing their characteristics, and providing a variety of methods to identify their extent. Chapters examine the soil, hydrology, and plant characteristics of wetlands and the general chemical and biological processes that create these wetland environments. Other chapters detail methods to identify and delineate wetland boundaries. Included are additional uses of soil and plant measurement methods, maps, soil surveys, aerial photographs, surveying, and other techniques to assist the reader in characterizing wetlands. The emphasis is on wetlands in the US. Water and Environmental Management in Europe and North America. A Comparison of Methods and Practices. George Eden and Malcolm Haigh, eds.

Prentice Hall Inc, Englewood Cliffs, NJ; 1994. 445 pp. (ISBN o-13-289083-6) hardcover. This book contains the proceedings of a symposium organized by the Institution of Water and Environmental Management of the UK. The conference

took as its theme “Europe and North America-how far apart?“. The event was a forum for the comparison of how the increased pressures had been handled on the two continents, and, if the products and ideas had developed in different ways, to compare the variations so that engineers and scientists from both continents could learn from one another. The conference consisted of two plenary sessions which covered the themes of regulation and water quality control, and environmental impact and reclamation. Comparisons were made between the trends in environmental legislation and practices on the two continents. It became clear that the recently introduced water quality standards presented new challenges to the water treatment specialist, which in turn had stimulated an increased level of collaboration and a greater alignment between Europe and North America of the treatment processes used. The book describes the current status of water management in the UK and is likely to be useful to the readers interested in water management in that country. Water and Wastewater Treatment Guidebooks. Paul N. Cheremisinoff. Prentice Hall Inc, Englewood Cliffs, NJ; 1994. Biomanagement of Wastewater and Wastes. 221 pp. (ISBN O-13-501230-9), SZudge Management and Disposal. 208 pp.(ISBN O-13-501248-1), and Water Management and Supply. 266 pp. (ISBN O-13501214-7) hardcover. These three volumes deal with various aspects of water and waste water. Apparently, they resulted from sanitary engineering courses offered by the author at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The discipline of the author is clearly manifested in these texts in that the emphasis is in engineering and practical aspects of water treatment. Normally, these volumes would be combined into a larger volume containing these and other relevant subjects of water treatment. The decision of the author to separate these into three volumes may have advantages in that the users have a chance to select their choice without the need of purchasing a more expensive combined volume.
