GROWTH IN CHILDREN WITH RENAL DISEASE Introduction
T
HE planning committee of the Third International Workshop on Renal Insufficiency in Children , held at Airlie House, Warrenton, Virginia, May 3 through 5, 1985, set as the specific aim of the meeting "gaining a better understanding of factors contributing to the progression, metabolic consequences and hormonal imbalances that affect children who have chronic renal disease." Emphasis was on growth, body composition, and social and psychologic development. Scholars versed in endocrinology, anthropometry, nutrition, and child development met with pediatric nephrologists having diverse research interests, to achieve this goal. The original seminar held in Carmel, California in 1977, brought together a similar group with what appeared to be good results. The meeting in Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany in 1982, provided the forum for a progress report of many investigators working with children with renal disease. The Airlie House meeting attempted some of both. Fourteen sessions, five plenary and nine workshops, were held. Recorders at each session used summaries from each speaker and tapes of the session to develop a report of that session, which was reviewed by each participant listed as coauthor. These reports and a commentary constitute the proceedings of the meeting, which are published in this issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases . We hope the meeting and these reports satisfy the original aim.
The planning committee acknowledges with gratitude the support of the National Institute of Arthritis , Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the International Pediatric Nephrology Association. They also note with gratitude the support of the National Kidney Foundation and the editorial board of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases for making possible the publication of reports of the workshop. Invited speakers, participants, and recorders in the workshop fully met expectations of the planning committee, and for this we are appreciative . Appreciation is also extended to Mary Pike, University of Wisconsin , and Kathleen Gallagher and Jane Turner, University of California, San Francisco for administration and manuscript preparation , and to family members who were supportive . Drs Donald Potter, William Silverman, Albert Jonsen , and David Powell were helpful as reviewers . The commentary at the end , to which the reader's attention is invited, enlarges on several issues raised by the reports . The editors are particularly grateful to Dr William Silverman for his contribution to the commentary regarding controlled trials .
