Lead-polyethylene shielding Proceedings of a conference organized jointly by the IPC journal Computer Aided Design and the CAD Centre, Cambridge. Lead laminate cladding I.ead-faced prefabricated panels are being supplied to the building trade by Broderick Structures Ltd of Woking, Surrey, for use as roofing and cladding. T h e panels (2 ft X 5½ ft, 0-6 X 1.6 m) consist of a relatively thin sheet of lead (up to 3 lb, 1"4 kg, weight) bonded to ~ i n (19mm) chipboard which is backed by a bonded foil vapour ,harrier to prevent warping. Broderick also offer lead-faced plywood panels for fascia panels or indoor use and lead-faced copper for guttering. GRP pipe system Glass-reinforced polyester pipe with a corrosion-resistant elastomer lining is being marketed by Dunlop Ltd. T h e CR.P shell comprises longitudinal glass fibre tapes, filament wound radial glass fibre rovings and polyester resin. This provides high mechanical strength and light weight while the elastomer lining offers low friction and a high resistance to abrasion and corrosion. T h e pipe can be used in the pressure ~ange 711 m m H g vacuum to 690 k N / m ~ without leaking owing to the elastomer lining. A choice of elastomers is o f f e r e d - - n a t u r a l rubher, butyl rubber, polychlorprene, nitrile butadiene rubber, chlorosulphonated polyethylene. A homogenous mixture of 25vo1% lead in a polyethylene matrix provides a lightweight shielding material for radioisotope and nuclear medicine laboratories, with a gamma ray shielding ability about 25% that of lead. T h e weight of a 2 )< 4 )< 8in (5)< 10)<20cm) lead-polyethene brick is only 8 Ib (3'6 kg) whereas solid lead bricks weigh 26 lb (11'8 kg). GRP cab for high speed train This autumn British Rail is to put a prototype of their 125 mph High Speed T r a i n (HST) into passenger service for evaluation. T h e HST is the forerunner of the Advanced Passenger T r a i n which will have a maximum speed of 150 mph. T h e complete cab module (see illustration) is of c,~e which produces a weight saving of about 30% compared with a traditional cab. Also the cab is designed to withstand very high impact loading.
