AUTOMOTIVE manufacturer Opel is using glass reinforced plastic (GRP) for the transmission housing in its Corsa car in order to reduce manufacturing costs. German c o m p a n y Bosch manufactures the housing using Ultrador B4300 GIO, a 50% glass fibre reinforced polybutyleneterephthalate (PBT) from BASE The housing is required to protect the control module against mechanical and thermal stress and exposure to fuel and lubricants. A high level of dimensional accuracy is also required because the part takes up the gear axles. According to BASF, GRP was chosen for the housing because it offers low weight and noise transmission compared with conventional materials such as metals, and also allows different functions to be integrated into one housing. This helps to keep the cost of the housing lower than if it had been made using conventional materials says the company. The part, made using injection moulding, is designed to be stiff, tough and dimensionally stable in a wide range of temperatures. Bosch; tel: +49-711-8110; website: www.bosch.de.
