A MAJOR expansion programme is underway at Graham Roberts Plastics (GRP Ltd), a UK-based distributor of resins, glass fibre reinforcements and other products for the reinforced plastics industry. The company is currently in the middle of a 12-month plan to triple its business by means of sales growth and acquisitions. GRP Ltd was formed around 50 years ago to develop new forms of plastic, but the company has not been actively promoted over recent years. With a turnover of about &5 million it is currently the smallest division of Cannon Technologies Group, which took it over in 1985. Cannon’s objective is to make GRP Ltd its third largest division by the end of this year. The expansion plan was put into action in January. GRP Ltd already stocks glass fibre reinforcements, resins and other items such as release agents and mould preparations, from many manufacturers. It intends to set up new distribution agreements with more companies; a contract with a major European producer of glass mat has just been finalized. It currently markets around 70 tonnes/ month of GRP products; it is aiming to increase this figure to 200 tonnes/ month by the end of the year. The company is also establishing a number of new distribution centres. Parent company Cannon recently acquired a French electronics com-
pany with surplus warehousing and this will start distributing GRP products by the end of the year. GRP Ltd is also opening new UK sites in New Milton and also near Leeds. The company also has a manufacturing site in Nottingham where it produces around 50 tonnes/ month of its own materials. These include specialized resins for the electronics, boat and building markets. The products are sold under the names Techmat, Techgel and Techresin. The first stage of the expansion strategy will target the UK market, to develop a strong base from which to grow. In the long term the firm hopes to expand into Europe, starting early next year when its French plant comes on line. The firm will also be targeting new markets, moving away from traditional products for the building industry into higher performance areas such as electronics and domestic appliances. For instance, it has sourced high performance resins and gels from the Far East which have thermal insulation properties making them suitable for applications such as refrigerated vans. In-house research, involving work with a number of universities, is focussed on developing products to customer specifications. Graham Roberts Plastics; tel: + 44- 1602866099; fax: + 441602- 863466.
