Three drill holes provided control of stratigraphy, material types and ~nit thicknesses. Electric surl g~mm,-rsy logs were run to obtain geophysical data for the materials encountered. Surface geophysics was employed to determine the lateral extent, chamges in materials and thickness, ard chamnel eomflg~atlon of the units noted in the drill-hole amd geophysical log data. 795211 ENGINeeRING RESOURCE UNIT APPROACH TO ENGINE~ING LAND-USE PLANNING King, M J Bull Ass Emgng Geol, VIS, N3, 1978, P253-267 The approach combines the ~hysical and engineering properties of lamdfcrm, unconsolidated surficial materials and bedrock into simgle mappable units to give a three ~,~usional perspective of an area. The paper describes the method anl discUsses how it rosy be applied to engineering land use studies.

Only those parameters which are commonly of interest in rock engimeering are described. @1-1~tative descriptions deperding only on visual inspectiom and simple mechanical field tests are ~u~d. Pr~,~y core descriptions include descriptions of colour I weathering a fabric, discontinuity surface spacing, hardness, rock ~ m e and stratigraphic horizon. This is followed by a descrip-

If significant, an additional description of the mature of the fracture filling including ~oisture, colour, consistency or hardness, soil cr rock type ard origin is added. The sigmificance of each of these parameters with respect tO e~gineering behaviour is discussed and stanlard descriptive terms defined. Reccmmerdations are m~de for the hardli~6 and storage of rock cores. Some useful techniques for the logging of core are discussed.
