The following APIC guidelines for infection control practice are being developed under the direction of the Guidelines Committee: 1. "Guideline for Use of Topical Antimicrobial Agents" by Elaine Larson, RN, PhD, FAAN This first APIC guideline can be found in this issue of the AMERICANJOURNAL OF INFECTION CONTROL. 2. "Selection and Use of Disinfectants" by William A. Rutala, PhD, MPH We anticipate publication of this draft guideline in the February 1989 AMERICANJOURNALOF INFECTIONCONTROLfor review and c o m m e n t by the APIC membership. 3. "Infection Control Guidelines for Home Health" by Bryan Simmons, MD, Rebecca Scott, RN, and Martha Trusler, RN Working copies of this guideline currently are being reviewed by the APIC Guidelines Committee, APIC Board of Directors, APIC committee chairmen, APIC legal counsel, the editor of the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF INFECTION CONTROL, and experts from other professional organizations. 4. "Infection Control in the Long-Term Care Facility" by Philip Smith, MD, FACP, and Patricia Rusnak, RN The first draft of this guideline has been written and is in the review process by the Guidelines Committee. 5. Consideration is being given to developing future guidelines on (1) cleansing and disinfection of flexible fiberoptic endoscopes and (2) reuse of disposable medical devices. Members of the Guidelines Committee maintain liaison relationships with more than 50 professional organizations for the purpose of identifying standards and guidelines that relate to the practice of infection control. Recent liaison activities include "the following: 1. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F04.20 Subcommittee on Reprocessing of Medical Devices APIC, represented by Marjorie Underwood, is participating in the develop-

ment of voluntary consensus standards for reuse and reprocessing of medical devices. Other participating organizations include the American Hospital Association (AHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Health and Human Welfare Canada, American Society for Healthcare Central Services Personnel, consumer groups, and manufacturers 2. Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Recommended Practices Subcommittee Nancy Bjerke, representing APIC, is an active member of this subcommittee, which currently is reviewing drafts for product evaluation and selection, laser safety in the operating room, and operating room environmental sanitation. 3. Joint Committee on Healthcare Laundry Guidelines APIC, represented by Marjorie Underwood, was invited to participate on this committee along w i t h the AHA, CDC, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and textile and laundry organizations. The 1986 "Guideline for Healthcare Linen Service" was extensively revised to incorporate the concept of universal precautions. Preliminary plans were made to develop an educational video for laundry personnel on acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and infection control. 4. American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN)

The AACN Occupational Hazards Task Force recently developed a position statement on prevention of transmission of blood-borne pathogens and a handbook on occupational hazards, which contains a chapter on biologic hazards. At AACN request, Emily Rhine hart, representing APIC, reviewed both documents and provided suggested revisions to the biologic hazards chapter. 5. American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) The AARC and the FDA held a consensus conference Sept. 29-30, 1988, to identify problems associated with the introduction of respiratory care equipment in the home. APIC was invited to participate, and our representative was Dr. Bryan Simmons. 6. Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations The Guidelines Committee members revi~we~d the second draft of the proposed revision of the infection control chapter of the accreditation manual. Comments were provided to the APIC president for inclusion in APIC's response to the Joint Commission.
