Gurit expands automotive parts capacity COMPOSITE MATERIALS and services supplier Gurit has announced a further expansion of its UK automotive parts manufacturing site, to double its capacity by mid-2013. The company has also won a second supply contract from an un-named car manufacturer in Italy. This contract follows the announcement of a €3 million with this customer in October 2012. The prototype deliveries of the new composite parts will commence in the first quarter of 2013, with series supply starting in the second half of the year. The whole new contract is worth some €1.5 million.
The plant expansion will start in the first quarter 2013 and will be completed by the summer, doubling its overall automotive composite car parts production capacity.
which combines two layers of fibre reinforcement around a syntactic resin core, and an in-mould primer layer. The process is autoclave-free. (For more information about this process see:
The companies have agreed to explore opportunities in the areas of aerospace, infrastructure, energy, oil and gas, and transportation, and to explore supplying both the Russian and global markets. The strategy presupposes potential investments in Prepreg-ACM and Nanotechnology Centre of Composite, HCC and RUSNANO portfolio companies managed by HCC.

Dow and Turkish company Aksa Akrilik Kimya Sanayii AS announced their agreement to form DowAksa, a joint venture to manufacture and commercialise carbon fibre and derivatives, in 2011. Aksa and Dow each hold a 50% stake in the joint venture. Government-owned RUSNANO’s mission is to develop the Russian nanotechnology industry through co-investment in nanotechnology projects with substantial economic potential or social benefit. Holding Company Composite comprises companies producing carbon fibre and carbon fibre-based fabrics, and prepregs. “The signing of the MOI on potential manufacturing of carbon fibre intermediates in Russia marks a significant step

forward in Dow’s innovation and growth strategy, and strengthens our commitment to addressing the needs of growing emerging geographies such as Russia,” states Andrew N. Liveris, Dow’s Chairman and CEO. The agreement emphasises the intentions earlier outlined in a 2011 memorandum of understanding between Dow and RUSNANO on potential joint projects in the areas of energy efficiency, infrastructure, lightweight materials and life sciences, as well as plans by DowAksa and HCC to consider carbon fibre manufacturing in Russia. In brief Abaris Training and the University of Nevada, Reno, are partnering to deliver training that takes high school and college graduates with no knowledge of composites, to provide industry with workers possessing the technical knowledge and practical skills to produce high-quality composite parts. The approach is three five-day courses offered by the University of Nevada, Reno Extended Studies, and held at Abaris’ site in Reno. Completion of all three courses is required for the University of Nevada, Reno certificate in Advanced Composite Manufacturing. Gurit is implementing a unified global brand. The SP-High Modulus brand, Gurit’s marine business, will change to the global Gurit brand. Red Maple, Gurit’s tooling business located in hina, will be called Gurit (Tooling). The balsa wood business Balseurop will be called Gurit (Balsa). Gurit says that during 2013 all legal entities will be officially re-named. Product names will not change.
