Hagop Bessos Ph.D., FRCPath

Dr. Hagop Bessos was born in Beirut, Lebanon, where he completed his secondary education at the International College in 1970, graduating with a Baccalaureate in science and mathematics. After obtaining his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at the American University of Beirut, Dr. Bessos joined Professor Keith James in 1976 at the Department of Surgery at the University of Edinburgh Medical School where he obtained his Ph.D. in tumour immunology with the support of an Annie and Mckenzie scholarship award. In May 1980 he joined the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) as a scientist to carry out research and development in RBC monoclonal antibodies, publishing his first papers in Transfusion Medicine. In 1983, as a senior scientist, his research interests moved into the field of thrombosis and haemostasis, particularly Factors VIII and IX, and then onto platelet storage lesion and platelet immunology (predominantly neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia) which remain his main research interests as a principal Scientist and Section Head of Immunohaematology R&D at the SNBTS National Science Laboratory in Edinburgh. Dr. Bessos has published over 50 papers and is coholder of two patents with Dr. William G. Murphy in platelet antibody and antigen assays. He is a Fellow of

The Royal College of Pathologists and has given over 50 presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Bessos has been a member of several scientific bodies and societies including the British Society of Immunology, British Blood Transfusion Society, British Society of Haemostasis and Thrombosis, International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Federation of Clinical Scientists, Institute of Biology, and the American Association of Blood Banks. He has co-chaired the BBTS Blood Components Special Interest Group with Dr. Jerard Seghatchian from 1991 to 2000, organising and co-chairing its bi-annual international meetings. He has also been the chairman of the Scotblood Programme Subcommittee since 1998, coordinating and publishing the proceedings of the annual SNBTS Scotblood meetings. In 2003/2004 he managed the International Platelet Immunology workshop held in Edinburgh in conjunction with the International Society of Blood Transfusion. Dr. Bessos has trained and supervised national and international clinical and scientific staff and post graduate students, and has reviewed and edited papers for several scientific journals. Dr. Bessos lives with his wife Kathleen and two children in Edinburgh. He is an avid traveller regularly reporting on his travels in the SNBTS Bloodletter magazine. He enjoys hiking, swimming, and playing badminton and racket ball.
