points of diagnosis, treatment, and surgical intervention. The second part of each case study is “Perspectives for Therapy,” with a detailed discussion of hand therapy intervention and a summary of important points in the “Clinical Pearls.” Separate bibliographies for each section are included. Each case study has simple photographs, radiographs, or diagrams to support the text. Hand Pearls is a pleasure to read for several reasons. First, each case study provides the “nuts and bolts” of evaluation and treatment from a hand surgeon’s perspective. The hand therapist gains insight into the hand surgeon’s world. Second, the hand therapist will appreciate the logical next steps into rehabilitation of patients once the hand surgeon’s work has been done. Third, the case studies are well chosen for their diversity of patient populations and varied diagnoses. Many of the case studies provide up-to-date treatment guidelines and examples of protocols. In addition, the reader is treated to thorough explanations of therapeutic intervention. These points are repeated and summarized in the “Clinical Pearls” section.

Hand Pearls. By Matthew J. Concannon and Jack Hurov. Philadelphia, Pa.: Hanley & Belfus, 2002. 240 pages. $45. You have much to teach and learn from your peers.—CHINESE PROVERB

This exceptionally well-written book by Concannon and Hurov epitomizes the unique working relationship between hand surgeon and hand therapist in the treatment of upper extremity patients. Hand Pearls is a collection of 65 succinctly written, informative case studies of patients with traumatic, chronic conditions as well as diseases of the wrist and hand. Each case study is divided into two parts—evaluation and treatment, from the perspectives of the physician and hand therapist, respectively. Clinical presentation begins each case and is followed by physical examination, including laboratory findings, from the physician’s perspective. Then a question is posed, such as “What is the diagnosis?” or the reader is asked to identify the injured structures. The next section is devoted to diagnosis. The final section, “Clinical Pearls,” summarizes the important

For example, case study 61 epitomizes the thorough and state-of-theart information throughout the text. The patient is a 38-year-old man with a laceration of his left long finger. He was seen in the emergency room and referred to a hand surgeon. The patient had delayed primary repair of the extensor digitorum over the proximal interphalangeal joint. He was referred to hand therapy on the third postoperative day. The authors do a superb job of thoroughly discussing zone III and IV extensor tendon injuries and definitive postoperative approaches to extensor tendon management. The subsequent section outlines a step-bystep early mobilization protocol for this diagnosis, complete with photographs of the volar-based templates for specific arcs of motion. Hand Pearls is a well-written, easyto-read reference offering evaluation and treatment of a variety of upperextremity diagnoses. It shows the unique relationship between the hand surgeon and hand therapist. I would highly recommend that this book be added to the clinical libraries of hand therapists and hand surgeons alike.—
