HAND TRAUMA: A Practical Guide By Dieter Buck Gramcko, Reimer Hoffmann and Rudiger Neumann. 175 Pages, 211 Illustrations, 2 Tables, Index, References, Thieme Inc. New York ISBN 0-86577-191-X Hippokrates Verlag Stuttgart ISBN 3-7773-0756-4. The preface to the English Edition warns that “some teutonic idiosyncracies remain”. Most obvious of these is the clear layout with attention to detail and easily understood photographs and diagrams, where necessary showing problems that can occur; such as with incorrect immobilisation or tight dressings. “A patient who complains about his dressing is always right until proven otherwise”. Chapters in the Guide cover General and Special Principles. The former includes a useful section on regional anaesthesia as well as covering history and examination through surgical technique to Errors in Patient Management and Surgery. Injuries to specific areas are individually covered under “Special principles” including complex hand injuries infection and rehabilitation. Clearly this book was intended originally for Residents working in the “Hand Surgery Unit”. It is translated well and should find its way onto many personal as well as library book shelves. A. F. W. ORTHOPAEDIC NURSING AND REHABILITATION. By Mary Powell. 9th Edition 698 pages, illustrations (line and black and white photographs), index, Chapter bibliography. Churchill Livingstone, Edinburgh and London 1986, f19.50 ISBN o-443-032386. The fact that this book has reached its ninth edition (and still produced by its original author) is an obvious tribute to its usefulness to the nursing and rehabilitation professions. The current edition maintains the broad well planned character of its predecessors, the main author being supported by some twenty-two colleagues. It is amply illustrated by numerous black and white photographs and line drawings. Each chapter ends with a useful bibliography but regrettably few entries are from the current decade. Even the standard textbooks included are often not the latest editions. As the book is intended to span the whole orthopaedic field, its orientation towards the hand is limited. For its intended purpose it can be highly recommended and should be in all orthopaedic ward and therapy department libraries and, in view of its quite modest price, will be wanted by many nurses and therapists.
