Concise Encyclopedia of Environmental Systems. Peter C. Young, ed. Pergamon Press Ltd., Oxford, England; 1993.769 pp. (ISBN 0-08-036198-6) £155.00 hardcover. In the Introduction to this book, the editor states, "environment is everything but us". This definition is the basis for the exclusion of human-health-related topics in the book. Accordingly, environmental systems as used in this book consists of atmospheric and surface water modeling including certain aspects of ecology. The U.S. investigators will find a heavy reliance on European literature. The primary reason is that Europeans tend to publish their findings in the open literature. In contrast, the U.S. results are normally published in government reports, thus limiting their accessibility. This book is useful to those who desire to find a review of European literature. It is recommended as a library reference.

Constructed Wetlands for Water Quality Improvement. Gerald A. Moshiri, ed. CRC Press, Inc., Boca Raton, FI; 1993. 632 pp. (ISBN 0-87371-550-0) $79.95 hardcover. This book contains the proceedings of a symposium held in Pensacola, Florida. Although the editor does not give the dates of the meeting, it is likely that it occurred sometime in 1990 or 1991. As with many symposium proceedings, the quality of the papers ranges from excellent to less than fully satisfactory. The papers contain fundamentals of wetland processes and how constructed wetlands can be applied to water treatment under specific conditions. The 68 papers included in the volume indicate the wide international interest in constructed wetlands.

The Good News about Radiation. John Lenihan. Medical Physics Publishing, Madison, WI; 1993. 173 pp. (ISBN 0-944838-34-0) $9.00 softcover.

The Focus on Science is a series of books for the general public that explains in an understandable form various aspects of science. This booklet discusses the role of radiation in nature. It describes how radiation and radioactive materials are used in industry, research, and health care, and discusses beneficial aspects of radiation. The author is a clinical physicist with exceptional qualifications.

Handbook of Methods in Aquatic Microbial Ecology. Paul F. Kemp, Barry F. Sherr, Evelyn B. Sherr, and Jonathan J. Cole, eds. Lewis Publishers, Boca Raton, FL; 1993. 777 pp. (ISBN 0-87371-564-0) $129.95 hardcover. According to the editors of this book, their goal in preparing this compilation is to broaden the range of methods that a researcher, whether experienced or novice, might use for solving a problem. Initially, they considered including some 150 methods in the book. Eventually, they combined various methods and reduced the number of chapters (or methods) to 86. Each method is written by individuals who are "primary advocates" for the method. Although it is likely that the authors overemphasize the usefulness of the method they advocate, this is more than offset by the apparent thorough knowledge of the authors of their respective methods. This book is highly recommended as a library reference and as a personal copy.

Hazardous Waste Site Soil Remediation. Theory and Application of Innovative Technologies. David J. Wilson and Ann N. Clarke, eds. Marcel Dekker, Inc. New York, NY; 1993. 488 pp. (ISBN 0-8247-8980) $165.00 hardcover. This concise guide provides a comprehensive overview of available methods for remediation of contaminated soils and underground waters.
