Handbook of Non-Prescription Drugs

Every two years since 1967, APhA has

veloped by the FDA panels is provided to chapter authors for the development of the various chapters. Many authors selected have chapters in previous editions of the Handbook. Others were chosen from an extensive roster of individuals recommended to the Advisory Committee; all are pharmacists with clinical, educational or community pharmacy backgrounds. Each chapter of the Handbook will include an in-depth discussion of symptom complexes. The chapters will be written to assist the pharmacist in determining what approach to take with self-diagnosing and self-medicating patients. Besides helping the pharmacist assist the public in making wise decisions about o-t-c drugs, the text material will reinforce the importance of pharmacists as professionals and their role in assuring the proper and safe use of o-t-c drugs. Tables listing o-t-c products with available quantitative information will be updated to include new products and changes in formulas of products already on the market. Ten review panels composed of health professionals appointed by the Advisory Committee will carefully review all chapter material prior to publication. Although reviewers are primarily professionals in the field of pharmacy, specialists in medicine, dentistry and podiatry are also included. The chapters scheduled for publication in the 1976 edition of the Handbook are listed below with their authors .

published what has literally become the "bible" of over-the-counter drug information-the Handbook of Non-Prescription Drugs. The Handbook is used extensively by a variety of health professionals. Because of its importance to pharmacists, the APhA Board of Trustees authorized the development and publication of a revised and expanded edition of the Handbook. An Advisory Committee was appointed by the Board to oversee the revision process, and the Advisory Committee has named 38 authors and co-authors for the new edition . The new edition of the Handbook will be broader in scope although some chapters will be dropped-namely, depilatories, hair preparations, and deodorants and antiperspirants. Some of the products previously covered in those chapters will be incorporated in the chapters which ar"e retained . Additional chapters such as topical antiinfectives, contact lens products and o-t-c contraceptives will be included in the revised edition. The Advisory Committee has met twice at APhA headquarters to determine the scope and direction of the revision project. It estimates that the new Handbook will be published by mid-1976. Linwood F. Tice, APhA past president and dean of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, is the chairman of the Advisory Committee . Other members of the committee are-Howard C. Ansel, professor and head, department of pharmacy, University of Georgia; Leland J. Arney, APhA director of publications; Robert K. Chalmers, professor of clinical pharmacy, Purdue University; Pierre S. Del Prato, APhA director of clinical practices; Neil E. Esterson, community pharmacist, Seaford, Delaware; George B.
